    • A satellite communication system for communicating between a plurality of user terminals is disclosed having at least one satellite which provides multiple beams, a plurality of user terminals that communicate with each other via satellites of said constellation, at least one gateway connected to a public switched telephone network and communicating with at least one user terminal over the satellite communication system wherein each of said user terminals within a given frequency band is distinguished from another of the user terminals employing a combination of time slots and orthogonal codes implemented in a forward and return link. Each of the user terminals is equipped to initiate or receive or terminate packet data messages. Each of said user terminals is handed off from one beam of a satellite to another beam of said satellite. The hand off is predicated on signal strength determined at said plurality of user terminals.

    • Disclosed are systems, apparatus and methods for tracking or locating an asset along with providing emergency and non-emergency messaging services. An asset tracker is disposed on an asset. The asset tracker has a motion sensor, a GPS receiver and a simplex satellite transmitter for communicating with a remote location (back office processing center). The asset tracker also has a short-range transceiver for communicating with a fob device carried by a user. If an authorized fob device is not in range of the asset tracker device and the asset tracker device moves, as determined by the motion sensor and/or GPS location data, GPS data are transmitted via a satellite to the back office. The office sends the information to a desired recipient (asset owner, law enforcement, etc.). The fob device communicates with the asset tracker device when it is in proximity thereof. The fob device is programmed to have depressible buttons that transmit emergency and non-emergency messages to the asset tracker device which communicates the GPS location and message via a satellite to the back office. The back office sends the information to a desired recipient. Messages processed at the processing center are sent as email messages to one or more designated email addresses, as a short message service (SMS) messages to one or more designated cell phones, or as messages to an asset recovery service or 911 emergency center.

    • Disclosed are systems; apparatus and methods for tracking or locating a person that is lost or has an emergency. Personal locating apparatus is employed comprising a plurality of buttons, and/or a keypad and display, that define an on/off element, an OK element, a help element and a 911 emergency element, wherein the elements are used to select and deselect one of a predetermined number of operational modes. A global positioning system (GPS) receiver in the apparatus processes GPS signals received from GPS satellites to generate location data indicative of the location of the apparatus. A satellite transmitter is coupled to the processor that transmits the location data and a desired operational mode signal to a remotely located processing center via one or more communication satellites. A processor is coupled to the GPS receiver and the satellite transmitter that is programmed to respond to user selections to generate the desired operational mode signal, process the location signals from the GPS receiver, the desired operational mode signal, and optionally a user message, generate a signal for transmission to the processing center, and transmit the signal to the remotely located processing center via one or more communication satellites. The message is processed at the processing center and sent as an email message to one or more designated email addresses, as a short message service (SMS) message to one or more designated cell phones, or as a message to a 911 emergency center.
