    • A controller (24) is provided to selectively release an initiator (12) having first and second members (14,16) that clampingly engage an object (18) preventing it from moving in an urged direction. A spring wire coil (20) holds the members (14,16) tightly about the object, one coil end affixed to one of the members and the other coil end is held by a pair of link wire loops (82,86) of the controller (24) which is also removably secured to one of the members (14,16) by a bolt (36). When it is desired to release the object (18) an electric current is passed through the link wire loops (82,86) of sufficient magnitude to cause the loops to break, releasing the coil (20) to unwind and, in turn, release the object for urged movement.

    • A cylindrical rubber or elastomeric gasket which is L-shaped in cross-section having an outwardly extending rim or flange is initially located between a cylindrical backshell and a connector part which the backshell is to be magnetically clamped. The internal diameter of the seal closely approximates the major diameter of the connector part. The backshell end is slid onto the connector part and, more particularly, onto and over the seal with the seal flange extending around the end of the backshell with its outermost surface abutting against a flange on the connector part. The seal in this way accomplishes both aligning of the backshell with the axis of the connector part for the electromagnetic forming step and, as well, effects environmental sealing after the backshell is fully in place.

    • An aircraft altimeter-encoder is provided with an altitude sensitive barometric or aneroid bellows which simultaneously drives a visual altitude indicator and an altitude digital encoder. The indicator includes one or more pointers that register with a dial. The encoder includes a wheel or disc having a series of transparent and opaque regions scanned by photo-optical means. This generates digital signals corresponding to the altitude indicated on the face of the altimeter. The digital signals are adapted to be fed to a transponder for telemetering to a ground station. The altimeter-encoder includes means for simultaneously adjusting both the indicator and the encoder disc to compensate for variations in the local or ambient barometric pressure. Means are also provided for adjusting the relationship between the indicator and the encoder disc whereby the digital altitude signals coupled to the transponder correspond exactly to the altitude indicated on the face of the altimeter, referenced to 29.92 in Hg barometric pressure.
