    • A continuous web of sheet material is fed through the nip of a first pair of driven pull rolls around a series of idler rollers and through the nip of a second pair of driven pull rolls. The pairs of pull rolls are selectively rotated to exert a desired tension on the web in a tension zone formed between the pairs of rolls. One pair of pull rolls operates as feed rolls to advance a preselected length of the web to a rotating cutter mechanism so that envelope blanks of a selected length are cut from the web for each revolution of the cutter mechanism. The feed rolls are operated by a servo-controlled motor responsive to an operator initiated signal to adjust the feed length without interrupting the feed of the web to the cutter mechanism. The second pair of pull rolls operates as tension rolls and is servo-motor controlled to maintain a preselected tension on the web fed to the cutter mechanism. The web in the tension zone is rotatably supported by idler rolls having load cells for generating a signal to a controller proportional to the tension applied to the web. Operator input through a keypad to the controller actuates the tension rolls at a gear ratio for generating a desired tension in the web. A deviation in the applied tension from the commanded tension actuates the servo-motor for the tension rolls to adjust the rotation thereof to restore the desired tension in the web.

    • A pair of rotatable cutter mechanisms are positioned on opposite sides of a moving web and are arranged upon rotation of the cutter shafts to cut notches in the side edges of the moving web. The cutter shafts are rotatably driven by a drive mechanism that includes a pair of endless timing belts connected to the cutter shafts. One of the timing belts is reeved about a drive pulley that is non-rotatably connected to a helical gear. The main drive shaft has a helical gear that meshes with the helical gear connected to the pulley. The pair of timing belts are drivingly connected to each other by means of a pair of meshing helical gears connected to separate pulleys associated with the respective timing belts. Phase adjustment of both of the cutter mechanisms is accomplished by axially moving the helical gears connected to the pulley and main drive shaft while the helical gears remain in meshing relation with each other. The phase adjustment between the two cutter mechanisms is accomplished by moving the second pair of meshing helical gears axially relative to each other while remaining in meshing relation to rotatably displace one helical gear relative to the other and thus adjust the phase relation between the pairs of rotating cutter mechanisms.

    • A shaft for a cutter mechanism having a cutter blade secured to the periphery thereof is rotatably mounted in a frame mechanism. A driven pulley is nonrotatably secured to the end of the cutter shaft and is connected to a pair of drive pulleys by a flexible timing belt that transmits rotation to the cutter shaft and the cutter blade. Rotation of the cutter blade cuts notches in the side edges of a moving web. A plate member is pivotally connected to the frame mechanism and includes an aperture through which the cutter shaft extends. An adjusting cam is eccentrically mounted to the frame mechanism and is secured to the plate member. A pair of idler shafts are secured to the plate member and extend outwardly therefrom. A pair of idler pulleys are rotatably positioned on the idler shafts respectively and engage the timing belt to maintain a preselected tension thereon. Rotation of the adjusting cam through a preselected angle pivots the plate member and the idler pulleys through a corresponding angle on the frame mechanism relative to the cutter shaft. Pivotal movement of the idler pulleys turns the timing belt to rotate the driven pulley and cutter shaft in preselected direction through a preselected angle. Rotation of the cutter shaft rotates the cutter blade to provide a change in the phase relationship between the cutter blade and the moving web to be cut while the cutter mechanism is operating or static.

    • Window panels are cut in sheet material by means of a rotatable panel cutter and the sheet material is thereafter conveyed to a location adjacent a panel or chip receiving means. A negative pressure is applied to the underside of the sheet, the cut panel or chip is conveyed away from the sheet by the negative pressure. Turnaround rollers are provided for the sheet material. Where the panel is not completely severed from the sheet, a portion of the panel will be deflected by the turnaround roller and a blade is positioned adjacent the turnaround roller to engage the panel and remove the panel from the sheet. Air blast means are provided in overlying relation with the web above the panel receiving means to dislodge the panel from the sheet so that the air blast means will also dislodge the severed panel in the sheet passing between the panel receiving means and the air blast means.

    • An envelope blank is conveyed by a transport system in an envelope making machine to a folding mechanism that folds one or more flaps of the blank. In folding a side flap, the leading edge of the blank adjacent to the score line is conveyed along a convex face of a plowshare. The plowshare face applies at the leading edge of the blank adjacent to the score line a force which bends the side flap through an angle of 180.degree. to a position where the flap is folded to overlap the blank. A crease is formed on the score line to permanently set the flap on the blank. The folding of the flap is initiated by the convex face of the plowshare. Extending from the upper edge of the plowshare face is a grid-like network of flexible rods mounted to follow the helical path of the plowshare face. The free edge portion of the flap is supported by the grid to follow the flap leading edge being folded by the plowshare. The flap folding forces are applied at the region of the flap adjacent to the score line where the flap has the least resistance to bending. The folding forces are removed from the flap free edge which is supported by the grid to follow the movement of the flap leading edge. The trailing edge of the flap is stabilized by a guide plate positioned oppositely of the plowshare in the feed path. The guide plate prevents the flap trailing edge from falling downwardly ahead of the flap leading edge to assure that the fold is maintained in alignment with the score line.

    • The rotary panel cutter includes a cutter die that has a continuous upstanding knife blade. The cutter die has a body portion that is secured to a rotatable cutter shaft having a longitudinal axis. The cutter die knife blade has side edge portions that are perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cutter shaft and leading and trailing edge portions that are not parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cutter shaft. For cutting rectangular openings in a web the continuous upstanding knife blade has the configuration of a regular parallelogram wherein the length of side edges is the same and the length of the leading and trailing edges is also the same. The rotatable cutter shaft is mounted in a machine frame with its longitudinal axis at an angle other than 90.degree. with the center line of the web. The angle that the rotatable cutter shaft deviates from 90.degree. is preferably the same angle as the angle of deviation of the knife leading and trailing edges from the longitudinal axis of the cutter shaft. An anvil backing device, such as a rotatable anvil, is positioned adjacent to the rotatable cutter shaft and has an outer surface spaced from the rotary cutter die an amount slightly less than the thickness of the web material being cut. The longitudinal axis of the anvil is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the rotatable cutter shaft. A suitable conveying device, such as pull rolls, pull the web through the panel cutter between the cutter shaft and anvil and rotation of the rotatable panel cutter shaft cuts openings, such as windows, in the web.

    • A series of overlapping envelope blanks are fed into contact with a pull-out roll which engages and accelerates the first blank to separate it from the remaining blanks. From the pull-out roll, the separated blank is fed onto the surface of a rotary aligning wheel. A plurality of aligning pins extend from the surface of the wheel and are positioned in spaced relation around the wheel. The separated blank is fed into contact with the aligning pins forcing the blank with its trailing edge engaged with the pull-out segment to maintain the separated blank aligned on the surface of the wheel. Vacuum ports are positioned on the surface of the wheel adjacent to the aligning pins. The negative pressure from the vacuum ports secures the sheet to the surface of the wheel as the sheet is aligned into a preselected position on the wheel by contact with the pins. The wheel rotates at a lower speed than the pull-out segment and conveys the separated blanks in a radial path to a point on the aligning wheel where each blank is transferred to a folding mechanism where the seal flap of the blank is folded.

    • A stack of sheets or blanks for feeding one by one from the bottom of the stack by a feeding mechanism is supported for high speed feeding to subsequent stations. A feed cylinder rotatably supported beneath the leading edge of the stack includes a suction device. An intermediate portion of the blank leading edge is drawn by the suction device downwardly toward an opening in the periphery of the feed cylinder. Continued rotation of the feed cylinder further bends the blank. For blanks of large size and having a leading edge with an irregular contour the blank leading edge intermediate portion extends forwardly from edge lateral portions. Positioned in spaced relation along the interior of the feed cylinder are a plurality of air manifolds having outlets directed at selected angles upon the lateral portions of the blank leading edge. The manifolds are connected to a source of pressurized air which is directed in a sweeping motion upon the blank leading edge lateral portions upon rotation of the feed cylinder. The pressurized air flow sequentially bends the blank leading edge lateral portions downwardly away from the stack as the feed cylinder rotates to move the compressed air outlets into closer proximity to the edge lateral portions. A rotating sweep of compressed air downwardly bends the blank lateral edge portions to positively control the movement of the blank to separate completely from the stack before the blank is removed to assure jam-free feeding at high speed.
