    • Low temperature steaming and slurrying of wood chips results in significant improvement in treatment, the chips being maintained at a temperature below 110.degree. C. (more desirably at about 105.degree. C. or less, and most desirably at about 100.degree. C. or less) until actually heated to cooking temperature. Steaming may be accomplished utilizing a vertical chip bin with one dimensional convergence and side relief or a horizontal steaming vessel, the steaming device connected to a high pressure feeder. A pump having an NPSHR less than the NPSHA may be used for drawing slurry into the high pressure feeder from the steaming device, or a pump may be disposed between the steaming device and the high pressure feeder for forcing slurry into the high pressure feeder through a conduit including a radiused elbow. The steaming is practiced at a pressure of 5 psig or less, preferably substantially atmospheric steaming is practiced. The pulp produced typically has strength properties at least about 10% greater than the pulp produced from material where it is steamed and slurried at temperatures in excess of 110.degree. C.

    • A system for feeding wood chips entrained in cooking liquor to a high pressure feeder connected to a continuous digester includes a vertical treatment (e.g. steaming) vessel, a metering device connected to the discharge from the steaming vessel, a generally vertical chip chute extending downwardly from the metering device, and a slurry pump having an inlet. The slurry pump pumps the slurry from an outlet thereof to a high pressure feeder low pressure inlet. In order to minimize the effect of changes in liquid volume upon the operation of the system, and to provide separate control of liquor volume and chip volume, a substantially vertical liquor tank having a top and bottom the bottom including a discharge opening above the slurry pump inlet is provided. A conduit directly connects the liquor tank discharge opening with the slurry pump inlet. A pressure isolating device may be used in the system if it is to operate at superatmospheric pressure rather than atmospheric pressure.

    • A method and apparatus supply ozone containing gas under superatmospheric pressure to an ozone delignification device. The speed of a water ring compressor is controlled so that it compresses as much ozone gas per unit time at desired superatmospheric pressure as the ozone delignification unit utilizes, with essentially no excess. The ozone containing gas is fed from the water ring compressor through a separator buffer tank which levels out pressure pulses and separates cooling water from compressed ozone gas prior to the gas entering the ozone delignification unit. The gas passes through a control valve controlled by a mass flowmeter which senses the amount of cellulose pulp fed to the ozone delignification unit. The speed control of the compressor may be provided by a differential pressure controller connected across the control valve.

    • A multi-stage pressure diffuser is provided for treating paper pulp or similar comminuted cellulosic fibrous material. Two different subvolumes are defined within the annular screen of the pressure diffuser by a tubular baffle hung from adjacent the top of the vessel, and a transverse wall near the middle of the vessel. Wash liquid is introduced into the top stage, extracted liquid passes through the bottom of the baffle, and is removed through a liquid outlet at the top of the vessel. That removed liquid is then reintroduced into the bottom stage as wash liquid, and the extracted liquid from the bottom stage is discharged from the vessel at the bottom. The screen assembly may be blanked at the area of the transverse wall dividing the subvolumes from each other, in order to minimize the possibility of mixing of the extraction flows in the different stages.

    • A chip bin for wood chips in a continuous digester system includes internal steaming that is controlled in response to both the interior temperature across the level of chips in the bin, and the level of chips in the bin, so as to substantially prevent cool, non-condensible gas-laden chips from accumulating at the top of the chip column in the bin, and to substantially prevent steam blow-through. The temperature probe used in the chip bin has a temperature sensing portion with a length of about ten to twenty feet instead of the conventional five foot length, and extends across the level of the chips to a position about five feet below the level of chips. Control of steam added to the bin is provided utilizing a controller which controls the position of one or more valves in one or more steam conduits, each valve having multiple open positions and a closed position. A vacuum and pressure relief device is disposed in a non-condensible gases vent from the bin which minimizes the potential for gross gas flow variations across it. The relief device includes a solid interior peripheral portion of the vent, a gate mounted for pivotal movement by a pivot shaft, and a casing which is a cylindrical sector (having a sector angle of about 30.degree.-60.degree.) in which the gate pivots. The casing is mounted in the solid interior peripheral portion and a brush seal is provided between the gate and the cylindrical sector casing.

    • Filtrates from bleach plants for cellulosic (paper) pulp non-chlorine bleaching sequences are treated to minimize the consumption of ozone in ozone bleaching stages. Organic material in the filtrate used in a washer just prior to an ozone stage is oxidized to make the organic material less attractive to the ozone. It may be oxidized by indirectly heating the filtrate, and then reacting it with oxygen gas in a reactor. Alkali may be added to the filtrate in the reactor. Metallic ions are also removed from the system by applying an electrical potential either to the filtrate, an entire washer prior to the ozone stage, or to the pulp line prior to the ozone stage. All of the wash filtrates are treated and recirculated so as not to discharge any wash filtrates into the environment, or so that the only wash filtrate discharged from the washing system of the bleaching plant is a small stream used for smelt dissolution. A typical non-chlorine bleaching sequence utilized may be OAZEZP.
