    • The invention relates to a hydraulic planetary piston type machine and particularly to the rotary slide valve thereof. This type of machine has a rotary piston gear having rotational and orbital movement and a cardan type shaft connects the slide valve to the piston gear. The valve has inlet and outlet, annularly shaped, axially spaced distributor grooves in axially spaced relation. Alternately arranged inlet and outlet stub grooves extend axially from the distributor grooves into axially overlapping relation. The stub grooves in the valve have a commuting action with circumferentially arranged ports in the casing to provide for feeding and exhausting pressurized fluid to and from expanding and contracting chambers formed by the piston gear. In smaller machines the correspondingly smaller flow passages present sufficient flow resistance to substantially affect the efficiency of the machine. In the machine disclosed herein the stub grooves are provided with oblique or curved sections so that the resistance to fluid flow between the distributor grooves and the stub passages is reduced and the efficiency of the machine is thereby substantially increased.

    • Disclosed herein is a rotary engine operable as an internal combustion engine or powered from an external source, the engine comprising essentially three parts: (1) an outer housing or body, (2) a valve shaft extending axially through the body and having an eccentric mounted thereon, and (3) a rotor journalled on the eccentric. The shape of the internal surface of the housing and the rotor is such as to define a plurality of variable volume working chambers between the rotor and the housing. The rotor and internal surface of the housing may be cylindrical with the variable volume working chambers formed by sealing means projecting from the rotor in contact with the internal surface of the housing. The rotor and internal surface of the housing may also have a multi-lobed configuration with there being one less projecting lobe on the rotor than lobes in the housing with the projecting lobes of the rotor being essentially the same size and shape as those of the housing.

    • A progressing cavity, positive displacement rotary pump for liquid or semiliquid material, having a specially designed flexible coupling shaft for connecting a drive shaft to an orbital rotor. The pump components include a tubular stator with an interior helical surface and a hollow tubular orbital rotor within the stator operably connected to the shaft and having an exterior helical surface. The rotor and stator define therebetween sealed pumping cavities that advance axially as the rotor rotates and orbits within the stator. The rotor has a tapered socket with a polygonal transverse cross-section (e.g., pyramid-shaped) at its outer end. The rotor is coupled to the rotor drive shaft by the flexible coupling shaft that extends through the hollow rotor and that has an enlarged tapered head formed to fit tightly in the socket and be retained therein by a threaded fastener. The opposite end of the coupling shaft is connected to the drive shaft outside of the rotor. The coupling shaft flexes to accommodate orbital movement of the rotor during operation of the pump. Also, a unique seal retainer is used to locate a packing-gland-type shaft seal for the drive shaft. The retainer facilitates removal and replacement of the seal components.
