    • An operator input subsystem and an image signal processing subsystem are provided to a digital image processing system. The operator input subsystem comprises a CPU, a display device and an input device, whereas the image signal processing subsystem comprises a digital signal processor having a number of digitized signal correctors. For cases where the output results are expressible as smoothly differentiable continuous functions of the digitized input signal values and the processing parameters, the CPU receives the specified output results from the input device and the digitized input signal values and the current processing parameters from the digitized signal correctors. In response, the CPU determines the most optimal processing parameters for the digitized signal correctors to achieve the specified output results. The CPU provides the determined optimal processing parameters to the digitized signal correctors, which in turn use the parameters to correct the digitized signals. The CPU makes the determination by performing a standard non-linear optimization of the smoothly differentiable continuous function. As a result, the increasingly difficult task of providing processing parameters to the image signal correctors is done automatically for the operator, thereby making the image processing system more efficient and user friendly.

    • This is a film image input system wherein an image of the developed still photo film is made to focus on an image sensing plane of a charge coupled device through a taking lens to be converted into electric signals and the electric signals are input in a video monitor. The film image input system comprises: a zoom driving part for changing the image magnification of the taking lens; a scan mechanism for moving an image taking position on the film by the taking lens; and a control part for controlling the scan mechanism in such a manner that the moving speed of the scan mechanism is decreased with the increase in the image magnification of the taking lens and making the moving speed of a screen on the video monitor constant during scan. Furthermore, the control part can restrict the scan scope of the scan mechanism in accordance with the image magnification, satisfactorily display the scope being picked up at present on a display device, and return the scan position to the center of the film and return the image magnification to a predetermined standard magnification so that the film image in the whole frame can occupy the whole screen of the video monitor, upon receiving the standard reproduction command.

    • A film scanner operable according to dual line standards includes red, green, and blue linear array sensors separated by a line spacing that constitutes substantially integral first and second multiples of the line spacings of the respective line standards. More particularly, in 1125 and 1250 line television standards, the linear arrays are spaced such that the distance is substantially equivalent to 9 lines of the 1125 line standard and 10 lines of the 1250 line standard. The output signal from each linear array is registered to the same line for each standard by inserting separable sets of line delays into the signal paths from two of the linear arrays. The separable delays correspond to the first and second multiples of the respective standards. By switching between the respective sets of delays, an output signal is developed for a selected line standard.

    • Digital signals are generated and stored for each pixel of a frame of high definition video originated material. A computer reads the digital signals and converts them to binary image data by employing a selected look-up-table program to reassign color and black component values for each pixel. The programs applied in the component value reassignments are compiled from, and based on, comparative digital video component results of telecined film stocks' responses to selected color and grey scale gradients as charted against a selected video unit's response to the same charts under a selected number of identical lighting circumstances. The revised digital data is assembled and converted to an analog signal for a secondary modification wherein: A projector unit projects the high definition video frame through a macro lens onto a strip of exposed and processed motion picture film of an optional grey scale gradient and thus grain pattern density. An automatically variable filter over the projector lens compensates to maintain the same brightness result from the opposite side of the film surface. A precisely aligned, compatible high definition camera unit provides a synching signal to the projector and automatically frames and focuses on the projected image from the reverse side of the celluloid surface, scanning the projected scan lines, to output the grain-embodying image for recording and displaying on a high definition format or external conversation to NTSC for broadcast purposes.
