    • An electric protective circuit includes an electric fuse and an electric resistance loop connected in series with the fuse, the fuse and loop being mounted on a substrate. The fuse includes a solder that is connected as a resistance in a current series circuit between connection terminals and that melts at elevated temperatures caused by heating of the substrate. The solder is surrounded by a material that protects the solder against oxidation by the surrounding air and completely covers the solder, enabling the solder to contract onto the connecting terminals when it melts and break the current path. The material is temperature-stable in a solid state of normal fuse operating temperatures and includes one or a combination of waxes, resins, thermoplastics, and synthetic fluxes. The material is applied in a region or area surrounding the solder that is delimited by barrier walls that prevent the material from running away from the region. The resistance loop includes current-conducting paths that are mutually connected with bridging elements whose electrical resistance is much lower than the electrical resistance of the current-conducting paths. The resistance loop includes trimming elements for adjusting the resistance of the resistance loop.

    • A fusible flexible printed circuit includes one or more conductors extending along a flexible dielectric substrate. Each conductor is comprised of a layer of electrically conductive material and a layer of fusible material extending along part or all of said conductive layer. One or more gaps is formed in the conductive layer at location opposite a segment of the fusible layer so that electrical current flowing through each conductor is required to pass in its entirety through the layer of fusible material at the location of each gap in the layer of conductive material. The integral fuses are designed to specific electrical parameters and may be located randomly along circuit runs. Preferably, the circuit is reinforced at the locations of the fuses by metal support strips designed to minimize motion stress on the fuses and the fuses are sealed within bubbles in a protective overlay which capture debris when the fuses are blown. The use of such a circuit to incorporate a variety of fuses having different fuse ratings into the conductive paths of a flexible printed circuit is also disclosed, as is a method of making the fusible circuit.

    • An electrical component, particularly a fuse for a surface-mount component, is formed by sputtering an aluminum conductor onto a square tube, sleeving the tube into an outer tube, filling the assembly with a room-temperature vulcanizing silicone sealant, cutting the assembly into segments, and metallizing the ends of each segment. In one embodiment, the sleeved tubes are mechanically separated from the surrounding silicone. In another embodiment, the silicone-coated tubes are mechanically separated from the outer tubes. In another embodiment fuses are made by sputtering the conductors onto a thin glass substrate, covering a link portion of the conductors with silicone adhesive, and dicing the substrate.
