    • A material is disclosed which possesses at least two of the following characteristics: (a) is optically transparent at a wavelength in the range from about 1500 nm to about 1560 nm; (b) has a 1/n dn/dt greater than that of silicon, (c) has an extinction coefficient, k, less than 10−3. In certain preferred embodiments, the material has the following characteristics: (a) 1/n dn/dt greater than that of silicon, and (b) an extinction coefficient, k, less than 10−3 at 1550 nm. In another aspect, a material comprising semiconductor nanocrystals, wherein the semiconductor nanocrystals are capable of displaying thermo-optic effects in bulk form and being sufficiently non-absorbing at a predetermined wavelength to be optically transparent at that wavelength is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the predetermined wavelength is about 1550 nm. Thin film, optical filters, and devices are also disclosed.

    • A phoretic display device comprising a plurality of electrophoretic or magnetophoretic cells, each having a phoretic particle dispersed within a suspension medium comprising a liquid crystal material. The phoretic cell is adapted to induce defects, sometimes known as disclinations, in the alignment of the liquid crystal material within the cell which act to exert a retentive force on the phoretic particle when within the region of influence of the defects. The configuration of the display introduces a threshold level in the electric or magnetic field required to move the phoretic particle between defects within the cell. Accordingly, the non-linear electro-optic or magneto-optic behaviour of the display facilitates matrix addressing of the cells therein. The display may comprise a plurality of prolate spheroid phoretic cells arranged in an encapsulant, the major (long) axis of each cell arranged substantially perpendicular to the plane of the display.

    • A display device including a display layer displaying a black or white color according to an applied voltage, a transparent and non-transparent electrode that are disposed to sandwich the display layer, and a TFT driving circuit capable of applying any given voltage between the pair of electrodes. Also provided is a connection destination switching switch capable of switching the connection destination of the entire transparent electrode to an earth terminal or a connector power source terminal of an external power source connector. With this configuration, a voltage can be applied between the pair of electrodes without using the TFT driving circuit. Accordingly, if the TFT driving circuit fails to operate due to trouble caused by the displaying of information which is not permitted to be shown to others, a voltage can be applied to the display layer so that the displayed information can be erased.

    • An electric field activated bi-stable molecular system configured within an electric field generated by a pair of electrodes is provided for use, e.g., as electronic ink or other visual displays. The molecular system has at least one rotor portion connected to at least one stator portion, wherein the rotor portion rotates with respect to the stator portion between at least two different states upon application of the electric field, thereby inducing a band gap change in the molecular system, wherein in a first state, there is extended conjugation throughout the major portion of the molecular system, resulting in a relatively smaller band gap, and wherein in a second state, the extended conjugation is destroyed, resulting in a relatively larger band gap. A primary advantage of the molecular system is improved contrast. Because the colorant of the present invention is molecular and thus effectively monoplanar, there should be no backside reflection or scattering from the colorant. A second advantage of the present invention is improved resolution. Finally, each molecule of the present invention will latch to stabilize one or the other of its color states.
