    • An ion-exchange membrane method electrolytic cell comprising a coil cushion arranged between a conductive plate and a cathode in a cathode chamber, and further an ion-exchange membrane arranged in contact with the cathode. The conductive plate is not perforated, and the coil cushion is arranged so that its axial direction is in agreement with the vertical direction of electrolytic cell. Preferably the coil cushion is made of a metal coil and has an impact resilience of 7-17 kPa. The cathode preferably has supported electrode catalyst and is made of an expanded metal with strands of 0.1-1.0 mm width and 0.1-1.0 mm thickness, and having SW of 0.5-5.0 mm and LW of 1.0-10 mm, and 48-60% open area. The electrolytic cell is energy-saving, and damage thereof can be avoided over a long period, and elevation of voltage and reduction of current efficiency with time can be minimized.

    • A display device including a display layer displaying a black or white color according to an applied voltage, a transparent and non-transparent electrode that are disposed to sandwich the display layer, and a TFT driving circuit capable of applying any given voltage between the pair of electrodes. Also provided is a connection destination switching switch capable of switching the connection destination of the entire transparent electrode to an earth terminal or a connector power source terminal of an external power source connector. With this configuration, a voltage can be applied between the pair of electrodes without using the TFT driving circuit. Accordingly, if the TFT driving circuit fails to operate due to trouble caused by the displaying of information which is not permitted to be shown to others, a voltage can be applied to the display layer so that the displayed information can be erased.

    • A writing device is provided for color electronic paper which is capable of performing full color display. The writing device includes a head unit, a head unit moving mechanism which moves the head unit in a first direction, a feeding mechanism which moves electronic paper, and a controller. The head unit includes a writing head, an LED which emits light of three primary colors, an image sensing element consisting of a CMOS sensor, and an optical system. The writing head includes an optically transparent head main portion provided with pixel electrodes, and a common electrode (counter electrode). In the controller, an arrangement of three types of microcapsules in a microcapsule layer is detected to perform electric field formation for each of the pixel electrodes based on a detection result.
