    • A fuel injection system having a high-pressure pump and a fuel injection valve for each cylinder of the engine in which the pump has a work chamber, and the injection valve has a valve member movable in an opening direction counter to the force of a closing spring braced between the injection valve member and a displaceable storage piston that is acted upon, on its side remote from the closing spring, by the pressure in the pump work chamber. The storage piston is movable into a storage chamber counter to the force of the closing spring, and the deflection stroke motion of the storage piston is limited by a stop. The storage piston has one shaft portion of smaller cross section, disposed in an outset position in a connecting bore, and one portion of larger cross section disposed outside the connecting bore toward the pump work chamber, and upon the deflection stroke motion of the storage piston into the storage chamber, its shaft portion of larger cross section dips into the connecting bore.

    • A fuel injector for injecting fuel into a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, having a pressure booster in which the piston divides a work chamber, acted upon permanently by fuel via a pressure source, from a pressure-relievable differential pressure chamber. A pressure change in the differential pressure chamber is effected via an actuation of a servo valve. The control chamber of the servo valve can be pressure-relieved via a relief valve and which opens or closes a hydraulic connection of the differential pressure chamber with a return. For closing the servo valve piston, the control chamber can be acted upon by a fuel volume diverted from the differential pressure chamber. The action of fuel on the control chamber is effected via lines that contain throttle restrictions. A pressure relief of the control chamber is effected via a relief valve into a return on the low-pressure side.

    • The fuel injection apparatus has a high-pressure fuel pump and a fuel injection valve for each cylinder of the engine. The pump has at least one piston driven by the engine and delimiting a pump working chamber supplied with fuel from a fuel tank. A control valve at least indirectly controls a connection of the pump working chamber to a relief chamber and a pressure source in order to fill the pump working chamber during the intake stroke. The pump has a first pump piston inside which a second pump piston is guided approximately coaxially, with the two pistons delimiting the working chamber. The first piston is driven in a stroke motion, and the two pistons can optionally be coupled to move together as a unit during the delivery stroke, or the second piston can be fixed in a passive position so that only the first pump piston executes the delivery stroke.

    • A skipfire control system for use in a locomotive engine includes a plurality of skipfire mechanisms. Each skipfire mechanism is operatively associated with a respective injector rocker arm of the plurality of cylinders of the engine. Each skipfire mechanism includes an actuator movable between an inoperative position wherein the actuator allows the camshaft of the engine to engage and move the associated injector rocker arm to actuate the associated fuel injector, and an operative position wherein the actuator disengages the associated injector rocker arm from the camshaft to prevent the associated rocker arm from actuating the associated fuel injector. A skipfire controller is operatively connected to the skipfire mechanisms and is responsive to an engine operating parameter to actuate selected ones of the skipfire mechanisms to move the actuators thereof to operative positions to prevent actuation of the fuel injectors associated with the selected ones of the skipfire mechanisms.

    • A conventional fuel injection system meters fuel by varying the time for which the injector is open. This is an empirical rather than fundamental method of metering the fuel. The amount of fuel delivered for a given injector opening time will depend on the pressure difference across the injector orifice and the exact dimensions of the injector orifice. Both these parameters are subject to variation. An injector (1) which comprises a plunger (2), a solenoid coil (3), and a conical return spring (11) which is driving a primary high pressure pump assembly consisting of a primary piston (4) within a primary cylinder (5) together with primary inlet valve (8) and primary outlet valve (7). The plunger (2) is also driving a secondary low pressure pump assembly consisting of a secondary piston (22), secondary cylinder (23), secondary inlet valve (24) and secondary outlet valve (25). The solenoid coil (3) is under the control of an electronic monitor unit (10) which is connected to the solenoid coil (3) via two connecting wires (19). The injector is mounted in and is delivering fuel into an inlet manifold (20). By interrogating various sensors around the engine the electronic monitor unit (10) calculates the amount of fuel it wishes to deliver. From a simple volumetric calculation the electronic monitor unit (10) calculates how far the piston (4) must be moved to deliver this amount of fuel.

    • A fuel injection system for internal combustion engines includes a plurality of injection valves, each connected to an injection line and each having a nozzle chamber and a control chamber, which both communicate with the injection line; a valve member, which controls the injection openings and is actuatable via a first control face, located in the nozzle chamber and acting in the valve opening direction, and via a second control face located in the control chamber and acting in the valve closing direction; a first valve for controlling the pressure prevailing in the control chamber; and a second valve for switching the injection pressure.     • A control valve for an injector includes a spool valve assembly having a spool moveable between an open position and a closed position. The spool has a first hydraulic surface and a second hydraulic surface. A first chamber is in fluid communication with the first hydraulic surface of the spool and a second chamber is in fluid communication with the second hydraulic surface of the spool. An actuator is in fluid communication with the second hydraulic surface of the spool. The actuator, in an open position, provides a fluid path to ambient such that a hydraulic force acting on the first hydraulic surface of the spool becomes greater than a hydraulic force acting on second hydraulic surface of the spool. A flow path is in fluid communication with the second hydraulic surface to decrease a force acting on the second hydraulic surface of the spool during spool operation.
