    • An internal combustion engine having a valve train that includes a switchable cam follower is provided. The cam follower (20) has a generally cylindrical shape and can move longitudinally in a receptacle (21) of the engine (22), and is acted upon at one axial end by a cam (23) of a camshaft and at the other axial end indirectly or directly by a gas exchange valve of the valve train. A main oil gallery (24) is arranged in the internal combustion engine (22) for introducing hydraulic medium to a valve lash adjustment element arranged in the cam follower (20). A switchable oil channel (25) is arranged in the internal combustion engine (22) for introducing hydraulic medium into a region of a switch element arranged in the cam follower (20), wherein, the outer surface of the cam follower (20) has a helical groove (26), through which at a peripheral point of the cam follower (20) the switchable oil channel (25) is connected hydraulically to the region of the switch element which opens at another peripheral point of the cam follower (20).

    • Valve lift mechanism for an engine includes a two step variable valve lifter having roller followers for engaging multiple cams on an associated camshaft of the engine and an anti-rotation guide mounted in the engine externally of a cylindrical bore receiving the lifter. The guide engages an axial guide recess in the lifter body without requiring a corresponding recess in the bore. The lifter also has a saddle in a central low lift cam follower engagable by lock pins in an annular body of an associated high lift cam follower to lock the followers together for high valve lift operation. The saddle is disposed axially between a follower roller and a high pressure chamber of a hydraulic lash adjuster of the low lift cam follower so that lock pin loads are transmitted as compressive forces through the low lift follower. The high lift follower rollers are received in pockets having sides that are crowned by shallow convex curvatures defining axially extending ridges which limit axial motion of the rollers so that the rubbing surface and associated friction are limited. Various additional specific features are disclosed. Application of the features to other valve lifters and cam followers is anticipated.

    • The invention relates to valve control means for a push-rod internal combustion engine. With reference to FIG. 8 of the drawings, the valve control means comprises valve means, cam means comprising a camshaft having a first cam member and a second cam member having a different profile from the first cam member, and means for transmitting reciprocating movement to the valve means from the cam means. The means for transmitting reciprocating movement comprises a first cam follower member in engagement with the push-rod and a second cam follower member movable relative to the first cam follower member, and locking means to enable the follower members to be linked to move together. When the cam follower members are not linked the valve means is controlled by the first cam follower member in engagement with and following the profile of the first cam member, and when the cam follower members are linked the valve means is controlled by the second cam follower member in engagement with and following the profile of the second cam member.

    • An outlet valve lifter for internal combustion engine is described. In order to increase the braking power of the internal combustion engine it is necessary that the outlet valve is opened during the compression cycle. Advantageously, this is achieved by a hydraulic outlet valve lifter which is actuated by an external pressure source. Due to the pressure of the compressed air shortly before the ignition top dead center position great forces are acting on the outlet valve and accordingly on the outlet valve lifter. These forces, in the form of hydraulic pressure, act via the inner portion of the outlet valve lifter on the external pressure source and may cause damage. Therefore, the outlet valve lifter is provided with an inner portion which is lifted by a certain stroke due to the pressure actuation via a second pressure chamber so that the outlet valve opens. When the pressure within the second pressure chamber increases as a function of the forces acting on the outlet valve and surpasses the hydraulic pressure generated by the external pressure source, a ball valve closes the second pressure chamber so that the hydraulic pressure generated therein may not be transmitted to the external pressure source.

    • A valve damping piston and a cam follower piston have telescopic sliding fits in opposite ends of a through-bore in the lifter housing. A pressure chamber is cooperatively defined within the housing between the two pistons, and is communicated to the engine oil supply. A lash adjusting piston has a telescopical sliding fit with the exterior axial end of the damping piston, and the two cooperatively define between themselves a lash adjusting chamber. The lash adjusting chamber is communicated to the pressure chamber by an axial segment of the telescopic sliding fit of the damping piston to the housing. The clearance provided by this axial segment creates a flow restriction that results in the pressure in the lash adjusting chamber being appreciably lower, 50% for example, than the pressure in the pressure chamber. The damping piston contains a circumferential groove that is directly communicated to the termination of the axial segment.     • Improvements are provided to the variable duration lifter, and the valve train of which the lifter is a part, which have the effect of reducing the tapping noise of the valves at low RPM, which is characteristic of effective variable duration lifters. This is achieved by utilizing an effective length of the valve train which produces a reduced volume of the oil reservoir defined between the outer cylinder of the lifter and the internal plunger, such that when the engine operates at low RPM, the internal plunger "bottoms out" before the valve seats. This is coupled with a modified cam having a closing ramp which seats the valve more smoothly and quietly than does the conventional ramp. To further insure the quiet seating of the valve at the appropriate point of cam rotation, the bleed passageway of the lifter plunger is enlarged in cross-section in the preferred embodiment, and to reduce trauma on the underside of the lifter, a groove or flat is ground down the entire length of the external cylinder of the lifter which, by virtue of being in communication with the oil gallery, provides lubrication for the cam-following bottom of the lifter body.
