    • The device for the opening and mixing of fiber bales contains a bale opening device capable of being lowered on a bale suspended from a bridge-like machine frame which is fashioned in the form of a portal and is capable of travelling along a guide rail, said bale opening device being equipped with a conveying device. A bale opening roll or plucker roll (6) is provided as the bale opening device, its axis of rotation being perpendicular to the direction of movement of the machine frame and its working width being at least 75% of the total width of the machine frame. A suction channel (9) fixedly installed above the bales (B) serves as the conveying device for the fiber material taken from the bales (B).The device is of simple construction and has a usable opening width essentially equal to its overall width and makes it possible to achieve good fiber mixing.

A stationary slotted exhaust conduit (18) is provided on one face with an elastic, axial lip seal for guiding in sealed relationship a suction nozzle of at least one carriage (16) which can be moved in the axial direction along guide sections (41). The suction nozzle is connected to a hose and a vacuum is generated in the slotted exhaust conduit (18) through an exhauster. In order to avoid excessively high tensile stresses in the hose and to facilitate the return movement of carriages along a path parallel to an assembly belt, the carriage (16) is provided with a drive motor (94) whose power take-off shaft (95) carries a friction wheel (96) which can be brought into engagement with the guide section (41), and the flux of force between the drive motor (94) and the guide section (41) can be separated and closed, respectively, by an electrically switchable coupling element in the form of an electromagnet ( 100).

    • In a method of removing contaminated air by suction, ejector air is blown towards a tangentially directed inlet slot (3) in a cylinder (2a) comprising part of an air extractor (1). The contaminated air is entrained in this way to form a rotating air stream in the interior of the cylinder, said air stream also being imparted an axial movement component as a result of underpressure prevailing in the interior of the cylinder. The cyclone effect of the air stream in the cylinder is used to separate contaminated particles from the air and to deposit the particles on the inside of the cylinder. The air stream can also be caused to pass through a cylindrical filter (11) arranged centrally in the cylinder (2a). Blow-openings (8) for ejector air are suitably located in the vicinity of the end of a tangentially directed cylinder-extension portion (2b). The cylinder can be flushed to remove adhering particles therefrom, e.g. by means of a nozzle which is arranged in the slot (3) and which delivers a tangentially directed stream of liquid.
