The lateral diverter conveyor system (46) receive the cookies (11) from the downwardly tilted vertical diverter conveyors (33, 34 and 36) and route the cookies (11) toward a standby processing station (18 ).

    • A conveyor apparatus comprises a plurality of side-by-side arranged first conveyors lying in a first plane. Each first conveyor has a pivotal first conveyor belt portion adapted to assume a first pivotal position in which articles continue to be advanced on the first conveyor and a second pivotal position in which articles are deviated from the first conveyor. The conveyor apparatus has a second conveyor which lies in a second plane spaced vertically from the first plane and which traverses each first conveyor at a location of crossing downstream of the downstream end of the first conveyor belt portions. The second conveyor includes a plurality of pivotal second conveyor belt portions adapted to assume a first pivotal position in which the upstream end of the respective second conveyor belt portion is in alignment with the second conveyor, and a second pivotal position in which the upstream end of the second conveyor belt portion is out of alignment with the second conveyor. There is further provided a separate third conveyor situated at each location of crossing and lying in a third plane between the first and second planes; each third conveyor having first and second ends. At any location of crossing, the third conveyor is in operative alignment with the first conveyor belt portion in the second pivotal position of the first conveyor belt portion and the third conveyor is in operative alignment with the second conveyor belt portion in the second pivotal position of the second conveyor belt portion.

    • Cookies 20 having irregularly shaped upper surfaces are received in an as-baked, horizontal attitude from the cookie oven first on a slick top belt conveyor 10, then on an edge abutment belt conveyor 11, where the cookies are delivered in edge abutment relationship to a timing belt 12. The timing belt delivers the cookies to cookie loading wheel 14 which reorients each cookie in series from the as-baked, horizontal attitude to an edge standing attitude and aligns each cookie with the preceeding cookie in the cell 56 or 57 of a turret 15. Once the cookies have been properly aligned in an edge standing attitude, the cookies are urged by the loading wheel into the cell, and after a predetermined number of cookies have been properly loaded, the turret is inverted so as to drop the cookies into an awaiting cookie tray 65. Each cell 56, 57 includes a lead finger 60, 61 which holds the first cookie delivered to the cell in an edge standing attitude, and each subsequent cookie is held in its edge standing attitude by the previously delivered cookie.

    • An apparatus for forming groups of upright-oriented, stacked articles includes a supply conveyor for advancing the articles in a flat-lying, spaced relationship, a conveyor wheel and transfer pushers pivotally secured to the conveyor wheel in a circular array. The transfer pushers extend outwardly from the wheel and are arranged for consecutively lifting off flat-lying articles from the supply conveyor and for conveying the articles in a curvilinear path from an upstream end to a downstream end thereof. A guiding mechanism imparts a pivotal motion to the transfer pushers during their travel along the curvilinear path. There are further provided a gathering channel adjoining the downstream end of the curvilinear path for receiving articles from the transfer pushers in an upright orientation and a gathering pusher travelling in a closed orbital path for periodically engaging and advancing a group of upright-oriented, face-to-face arranged articles on the gathering channel from the downstream end of the curvilinear path.

The speed of the second carrier element is, in the direction of article advance, greater than the speed of the first carrier elements; thus the second carrier element takes over the conveyance of the article in the zone of the discontinuity and effects, in cooperation with the discontinuity, a toppling of the article from its upright position to a lying position in which the article engages the travel surface with one of the long sides downstream of the discontinuity, where the first carrier elements take over the conveyance of the articles. The second carrier element, at least during that portion of the closed path during which it engages the article, is located at a greater distance above the travel surface than the first carrier elements.
