    • A carton blank is used in a form, fill and seal machine on which a closure is directly molded onto the carton. The molding portion of the machine includes a tool set having first and second tool elements in which the first tool element has an aligning member extending therefrom in a direction transverse to a direction of loading the carton between the first and second tool elements. The aligning element has a predetermined shape having diverging surfaces. The carton blank includes a rear wall panel, a first side wall panel, a front wall panel and a second side wall panel. Each panel is separated from its adjacent panels by a vertical score line. A closure panel is adjacent the front wall panel, has an opening therein and is configured for having a closure molded thereon. The closure panel is partitioned from the front wall panel by a first horizontal score line. The closure panel has a closure panel fin panel extending from a side opposite the front wall panel. The closure panel fin panel has a height measured to an edge of the fin panel. A first upper side panel is adjacent the first side wall panel and is adjacent the closure panel. The first upper side panel has a first upper side panel fin panel having a height. The closure panel fin panel has a cut-out formed therein. The cut-out has converging edges having a shape complementary to the first tool element aligning member and configured to mate with the first tool element aligning member to laterally align the carton with the first tool.

    • A system for sealing a packaging wrapper around an object directs a flow of heated air to end flaps of the wrapper to move the end flaps into sealing contact with a body section of the wrapper to substantially enclose the object. The system includes an oven, a conveyor, a source of heated air and a means for deflecting the flow of heated air to the conveyor to seal end flaps of the wrapper with a body section of the wrapper. In use, an object surrounded by the wrapper body section is moved through the oven on a conveying surface of the conveyor, and heated air is moved through the oven bypassing the conveying surface to a region below the conveying surface. The heated air flow then encounters the means for deflecting the heated air flow, which directs the air flow upward and through the conveying surface to impact and move the end flaps into sealing contact with the wrapper body section.

    • There is described a method for wrapping an article using a web of packaging film having at least one tear line thereon in the MD, the method comprising the steps of: (a) forming at regular intervals in the MD a tab on the film, the tab having a free end connected by free sides to an opposite end of the tab attached to the film, the tab being positioned on the film so the axis of at least one tear line in the MD passes through both ends of the tab; (b) severing the film web to form sheets by cutting substantially along an axis across the TD of the web, the axis passing across the tab between its ends, where the tab along said axis is not substantially severed there through so the tab protrudes from the leading edge of the sheet; (c) wrapping a sheet formed from step (b) around an article to form a tube with the cut sides of the sheet overlapping, where the free end of the tab lies on the top of the overlap on the outside of the tube and where the cut sides of the sheet overlap at least to the extent that the tab in the film on the top surface overlaps with film underneath, and (d) sealing the film together within the overlap region by a sealing means which: (i) seals more strongly in the overlap region outside a tear line region inside the overlap, where the tear line region is defined by the cut edges of the overlap region (ex TD) and a pair of axes parallel to the non-cut sides of the film sheet (ex MD) each axis passing through the respective widest points of the side of the tab; so the free end of the tab is either unsealed or only weakly sealed to the film; and (e) wrapping the ends of the tube around the article and sealing the ends to form a sealed package around the article, the package readily openable by pulling the free tab end to initiate tearing along the tear line. Packaging (such as cigarette cartons) wrapped with films by this method are also described.
