    • In ski binding apparatus, cam surfaces are engaged by bearing surfaces movable with the ski boot arranged to afford lateral restraint yet allow the ski boot to move along the ski. A heel binding has inclined cam surfaces engaged by bearing surfaces movable with the ski boot to afford vertical restraint for the heel of the ski boot. The bearing surfaces pass the extremities of an associated cam surface to release the ski boot upon the application of a selected amount of lateral or vertical thrust to the ski boot in cooperation with a forwardly yieldable toe binding which allows the ski boot to slide forwardly for release at the heel, the toe binding having an adjustable force-applying means resisting forward movement of the ski boot to regulate the amount of thrust required to release at the toe and at the heel. An intermediate support between the toe and heel may also be utilized to provide lateral movement restraint for the ski boot and establish a pivot about which the ski boot will turn to reduce the strain on the leg. In an alternate form, a step-in carrier for the ski boot is releasably secured to the ski by toe and heel bindings together with an intermediate support for establishing a pivot for the carrier and ski boot between the toe and heel without altering or adding structure to the ski boot.

    • Means for supporting a ski boot on a ski and for facilitating sideward movement thereof in connection with an emergency release. An endless belt is arranged around suitable support means and positioned for movement transversely of the ski. By supporting the boot on such belt means, same is able to move against low but constant frictional resistance laterally with respect to the ski upon the occurrence of emergency release conditions. The belt may be supported upon fixed plate means suitably spaced from the ski if desired or it can be supported around rods supported, preferably rotatably, in space relationship to the ski.

    • 1,146,495. Toe-iron for safety bindings. H. MARKER. 27 May, 1966 [3 June, 1965], No. 23970/66. Heading A6D. A toe-iron for safety ski-bindings is characterised in that it can be swivelled about a vertical axis lying in the area of the heel, out of its normal position until it reaches either of two release positions without longitudinal movement, and does not release the foot until this angular position has been overstepped whereby the resistance of the spring is transmitted through at least one lever and an abutting member of the toeiron, which slides upon an edge of the lever when swivelling occurs, the lever and the spring being so constructed that when the swivelling occurs, the increase in the resisttance of the spring is approximately compensated for by the elongation of the lever arm between the lever fulcrum and the bearing point of the abutting member. In an embodiment, a long base plate 5 is arranged to rotate about a round plate 6, which is securely mounted on the ski 19 and lies in the region of the heel, the sole holder 7 being securely fastened to the base plate 5. A restoring mechanism comprises a cam plate 10 with a cam 24 which is held in its initial position by spring 15, and the roller 18 is supported in the pivot bearing 16, the pivots 11 and 12 being located in the end position of their associated guide slots 22 and 23. When the base plate is swivelled cam plate 10 will rotate about one of the pins 11 and 12 and the roller 9 will ride upon cam 24. The plate 5 can swivel freely about point 6 after release from the restoring mechanism. The member 8, in which roller 9 is supported, may be swivelled vertically about an axis 20 so that base plate 5 may be easily reintroduced into the restoring mechanism. Other embodiments are described in which (a) torsion springs are employed as the restoring element, whose free ends collaborate in each case with an abutting member of the toeiron and a fixed stop on the ski, and the sole holder member is pivotably supported on the swivelling plate and locked so that it cannot swivel until it reaches the predetermined angular position; and (b) bellcrank levers are employed as the restoring element, preferably pivotable about a common fulcrum, and which collaborate with one pressure or tension spring each and whose free lever arms lie around and bear upon the abutting member of the toe-iron.

    • 768,671. Ski-bindings. MARKER, H. March 10, 1953 [March 25, 1952 ; May 7, 1952; Oct. 16, 1952], No. 6636/53. Class 132(1). A safety ski-binding comprises a pivotable support check adapted to abut the front edge of a ski-boot sole, the cheek pivoting sideways on the occurrence of a predetermined excessive torque between the boot and the ski, the support cheek being pivotally mounted at its mid-point on an arm rotatable about a stud arranged substantially perpendicularly to the upper surface of the ski, adapted to support the ski-boot sole over substantially the whole of the front edge of the sole and provided with a projecting flange which grips the front edge of the sole over the whole width of the support cheek. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, two support cheeks 18 are used each of which is pivoted to a said arm 17. The studs 15 to which the arms 17 are pivoted are carried by a plate or a pair of plates secured to the ski. The heel of the boot is held by a plate 29 which can pivot on a screw 28 and which is adjustable in position by the provision of a slot 27 in the plate 29 for the screw 28. Members 30 to which laces can be connected engage the heel. The back of the heel is engaged by a spring connected in known manner to a cable 8 so that the toe of the boot is urged into contact with the cheeks 18 until the predetermined pressure of the spring is overcome by excessive torque. The toe cannot lift because of the projecting flange 18a. In the construction shown in Figs. 8 and 9, two arms 78 are each mounted on screwed studs 77 so that the height of the cheeks 80 can be adjusted. Each cheek is pivoted to its arms by a pin 79 and a spring urged ball 86 holds the cheek normally in a fixed position relative to the arm. The cheek can be locked to the arms when necessary by a locking member 96 which is slidable in slits in the arm and which can be pushed over the end of the cheek. The projecting flange 90 engages the upper edge of the sole. The whole of the boot is supported on a pivoted plate 99, movement of which is limited by a tongue 100 which engages a cut-out in the base plate 76 on which the studs 77 are mounted. The toe is urged into contact with the cheeks by a cable which engages the heel and which is tensioned by springs 105 the pressure of which is overcome by excessive torque. In a further construction, Fig. 4, two screwed studs 51 are adjustably mounted on a plate 43 which is slidably supported on a plate 42 screwed to the ski. The plate 43 is guided by pins 45 engaging a slot 44 and it is moved by a lever 70, the pivot of which is adjustably positioned and which is connected to the plate by a plunger 66 movable on a cylindrical member 67 against the pressure of a spring 68 which must be overcome by excessive torque. When the lever 70 is moved clockwise, the flanged cheeks 54 which are pivoted to arms 52 carried by the studs 51 are moved into contact with the toe of the boot and are held there by the pressure of the spring 68. The heel of the boot is engaged by members on a pivoted plate. The arms 12 are normally kept in a fixed position on the studs by a spring- pressed ball engaging a groove 50 in the studs. In any of the constructions a single cheek centrally positioned on the ski can be used.

    • A ski binding device having a plate adapted to engage the ski binding, in which the plate has a heel end and a toe end, and a heel absorption mechanism is adapted to absorb excessive lateral pivoting force from the heel of a ski boot. A restrictor biases the heel into engagement with a heel receptacle. A dual pivot engages the toe end of the plate for permitting both downward movement of the heel end and lateral movement of the heel end out of alignment with the ski. The lateral pivoting force corresponds to release of potentially harmful forces. The restrictor is responsive to upward force from the toe end, as results from disproportionate backweighting of a skier. The restrictor disengages the heel end from the heel receptacle based on a predetermined release force, and permit lateral outward displacement of the heel end upon disengagement of the heel.
