    • A liquid phase process is disclosed for producing halogenated alkane adducts of the formula: CAR1R2CBR3R4 (where A, B, R1, R2, R3, and R4 are as defined in the specification) which involves contacting a corresponding halogenated alkane, AB, with a corresponding olefin, CR1R2═C3R4 in a dinitrile or cyclic carbonate ester solvent which divides the reaction mixture into two liquid phases and in the presence of a catalyst system containing: (i) at least one catalyst selected from monovalent and divalent copper; and optionally (ii) a promoter selected from aromatic or aliphatic heterocyclic compounds which contain at least one carbon-nitrogen double bond in the heterocyclic ring. When hydrochlorofluorocarbons are formed, the chlorine content may be reduced by reacting the hydrochlorofluorocarbons with HF. New compounds disclosed include CF3CF2CCl2CH2CCl3, CF3CCl2CH2CH2Cl and CF3CCl2CH2CHClF. These compounds are useful as intermediates for producing hydrofluorocarbons. Azeotropes of CClF2CH2CF3 with HF and azeotropes of CF3CH2CHF2 with HF are also disclosed; as are processes for producing such azeotropes. A process for purification of certain hydrofluorocarbons and/or chloroprecursors thereof from mixtures of such compounds with HF is also disclosed.

    • Advantageous processes are disclosed for the production of vinyl fluoride. Also disclosed are advantageous methods which may be employed for the preparation of catalysts useful in such processes. Included are methods which involve (i) reducing surface B.sub.2 O.sub.3 present in a bulk chromium oxide composition containing surface B.sub.2 O.sub.3 by treating said composition with HF at an elevated temperature and/or (ii) treating a bulk chromium oxide composition containing B.sub.2 O.sub.3 to enrich the B.sub.2 O.sub.3 present on its surface by heating said composition in oxygen or an oxygen-containing environment (e.g., air) at an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to enrich the B.sub.2 O.sub.3 on the surface of the composition by at least a factor of two compared to the surface analysis of the untreated bulk composition. Processes are provided herein which involve contacting 1,1-difluoroethane in the vapor phase with a trivalent chromium catalyst (preferably a trivalent chromium catalyst having primarily the morphology of alpha-chromium oxide and/or containing less than 1000 ppm alkali metal as the alkali metal oxide) wherein chromium is at least 95 atom percent of the metallic cations of said catalyst, at a temperature between about 225.degree. C. and 375.degree. C. Advantageous embodiments of these processes are disclosed wherein (i) the catalyst is prepared by reducing B.sub.2 0.sub.3 present in a bulk chromium oxide composition as indicated above, (ii) chromium is at least 99 atom percent of the metallic cations of the catalyst and/or (iii) the space velocity is from about 200 volumes to 2000 volumes of 1,1-difluoroethane per volume of catalyst per hour.

    • A process is disclosed for changing the fluorine content of halogenated hydrocarbons containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, in the presence of a multiphase catalyst, which is characterized by preparing certain single phase solid catalyst precursors containing two metal components (e.g., a divalent component of Mn, Co, Zn, Mg and/or Cd and a trivalent component of Al, Ga, Cr and/or V) which have structures that collapse at about 600.degree. C. or less; and producing said catalyst by heating the precursor to produce a multiphase composition wherein a phase containing one of the metal components is homogeneously dispersed with a phase containing the other metal component, and at least when the precursor contains no fluoride, contacting said multiphase composition with a vaporizable fluorine-containing fluorination compound at a temperature of from about 200.degree. C. to 450.degree. C. Also disclosed are single phase fluoride compositions having the formula MM'F.sub.5 (H.sub.2 O).sub.2 wherein M is a divalent component selected from Mn, Co, Zn, Mg and/or Cd and M' is a trivalent component selected from Al, Ga, Cr and/or V (provided that Cr is not more than about 10 atom percent of M'); preparation of certain homogeneously dispersed multiphase catalyst compositions containing fluorides of those divalent and trivalent metal components; and certain homogeneously dispersed multiphase catalyst compositions containing fluorides of those divalent and trivalent metal components (provided that when Co is used another of said divalent elements is also used).

    • A process is disclosed for making CF3CF2CH3, CF3CF═CH2 and/or CF3CCl═CH2. The process involves reacting at least one starting material selected from the group consisting of halopropanes of the formula CX3CH2CH2X, halopropenes of the formula CX3CH═CH2 and halopropenes of the formula CX2═CHCH2X, wherein each X is independently F or Cl, with HF and Cl2 in a reaction zone to produce a product mixture comprising HF, HCl, CF3CF2CH3, CF3CF═CH2, and CF3CCl═CH2; and recovering the CF3CF2CH3, CF3CF═CH2 and/or CF3CCl═CH2 from the product mixture. Also disclosed is a process for making CF3CH2CHF2, CF3CH═CHF, and/or CF3CH═CHCl. This process involves reacting at least one starting material selected from the group consisting of halopropenes of the formula CX3CH═CH2 and halopropenes of the formula CX2═CHCH2X, wherein each X is independently F or Cl, with HF and Cl2 in a reaction zone to produce a product mixture comprising HF, HCl, CF3CH2CHF2, CF3CH═CHF and CF3CH═CHCl; and recovering the CF3CH2CHF2, CF3CH═CHF, and/or CF3CH═CHCl from the product mixture. The molar ratio of HF to the total amount of starting materials fed to the reaction zone for both of these processes is at least stoichiometric, and the molar ratio of Cl2 to total amount of starting material fed to the reaction zone for both of these processes is 2:1 or less.
