    • A wireless communications device includes a host processing unit, a modem processing unit, and a memory transport interface. The wireless communications device typically runs a variety of software tasks, some of which require considerably more memory than others. By processing the memory intensive tasks with the host processing unit and assigning tasks requiring high computing power but relatively smaller memory to the modem processor unit, a smaller on-chip memory can be used for the modem processor unit tasks. In addition, by using a messaging transport interface to transfer data between tasks running on different processing units, smaller local memories can be used in place of a shared memory. For example, by allocating and storing L1 tasks at the modem processing unit and allocating/storing L2 and L3 tasks at the host processing unit, duplicate memory components may be reduced or removed, thereby lowering system costs and improving system efficiency.

    • A multiwavelength transmitter comprises several laser sources (1) each configured to generate light of a different wavelength and a first array waveguide grating (2) arranged to direct light from each of the laser sources (1) into a first waveguide. The transmitter further comprises several electroabsorption modulators (7) each arranged to modulate light at one of the wavelengths with a respective data signal and a second array waveguide grating (6) arranged to direct each of said different wavelengths of light from the first waveguide to a respective one of the modulators (7). The optical modulators (7) are reflective optical modulators and the second array waveguide grating (6) is arranged to direct the modulated light reflected from each of the optical modulators (7) back into the first waveguide. An optical circulator (5) is provided in the first waveguide to couple modulated light from the second array waveguide grating (6) into an output waveguide. The laser sources each comprise a respective reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (1) and share a common cavity reflector (3). The first array waveguide grating (2) is located in the optical path between the semiconductor optical amplifiers (1) and the common cavity reflector (3). The transmitter has the advantage that it can be manufactured by hybrid integration of a monolithic wavelength generation sub-module and a monolithic data modulation sub-module.

    • The present invention relates to a method of optical communication, in particular optical communication involving spectral filtering in a passive optical network. The method includes the steps of: (i) performing a first spectral filtering function on a source signal having a spectral width so as to generate a plurality of feeder signals that are spectrally spaced apart from one another; (ii) performing a respective noise reduction function on the feeder signals; (iii) combining the feeder signals over a common waveguide of the optical link; (iv) receiving the feeder signals carried over the optical link and modulating the received feeder signals so as to impose data thereon; and, (v) returning the modulated feeder signals over the optical link so as to communicate the imposed data. Because noise is reduced centrally, a simpler passive optical network can be achieved.

    • A computing device has a plurality of subsystems located in subsections that are moveable with respect to each other. Communication between the subsections is accomplished with wireless transceivers transmitting over the air gap interface separating the subsections. Data from multiple communicating subsystems in the subsections is multiplexed into a single data stream and encoded into the communication protocol of the wireless transceivers. The encoded data stream is transmitted to a compatible transceiver where it is decoded. The decoded data stream is demultiplexed into individual data streams for each of the communicating subsystems. The wireless transceivers include multiple communication protocols and transmission frequencies from radio frequencies to optical frequencies. Optical fibers, transmission lines or waveguides may be used to transmit signals within each subsection depending on the wireless technology and protocol.
