    • An electronic weight measuring device has a data generator for generating the data according to an applied weight, a first memory, and a data processing unit for respectively storing the zero point data and span data into first and second memory areas in the first memory. This measuring device further has a second memory, for selectively storing the first and second mode data, and a data setting key. When the data setting key is depressed, if it is detected that the first mode data is stored in the second memory, the data processing unit allows the data from the data generator to be stored as the zero point data into the first memory area of the first memory, and also allows the second mode data to be stored into the second memory. When it is detected that the second mode data is stored in the first memory, the data processing unit allows the data from the data generator to be stored as the span data into the second memory area in the first memory, and also allows the first mode data to be stored into the second memory area.

    • A postage value calculator system includes a processor which receives article weight, destination, class and carrier type information for transportation of the article. The processor accesses a directory which vectors to memory locations to retrieve rate data for generation of a postage value. The system includes an address counter which is incremented to access successive memory address locations. All system memories include uniformly spaced storage locations which are reserved for addressing purposes only. Each time the address counter is incremented, a check is made to determine if the location reached is reserved for addressing data. If the location is not reserved for addressing data, the stored postal information is used for the postage computation routine. When the incremented address is that of the addressing data, the word stored in the memory is loaded into the upper byte of the address counter, the lower order byte is set to zero, and the program continues at the new address. Conservation of memory space and increased memory versatility is thereby obtained.

    • An electronic scale having a load cell and a converter for providing successive digital weight signals corresponding to time-samples of the output signal. A circuit for providing a statistical approximation of actual weight produces a weight-representing signal. The latest digital weight signal provided by the converter is compared to the weight-representing signal to determine if the difference therebetween is within a predetermined range and, if so, the latest digital weight signal is added to the statistical approximation. The weight-representing signal represents either a zero weight in the absence of an object, or the weight of an object which is placed upon the load cell. A zero storage register stores the zero weight and, if a predetermined number of digital weight signals differs from the weight-representing signal, the digital weight signals included in the statistical approximating circuit is replaced by the latest digital weight signal whereupon the weight-representing signal then produced by the statistical approximating circuit is supplied to a weight storage register. The difference between the contents of the weight storage register and the zero weight register represents the net weight of the object.

    • A system for bidirectional in-motion weighing of freight cars of a train includes a weighbridge, first and second sets of load cells, three wheel sensing devices, a control device, a device initiated by the control device for weighing operations, and a printer for the total car weight. The sets of load cells are mounted to receive the load from opposite ends of the weighbridge. Each set has a rapid change of output voltage when an axle enters or leaves the associated weighbridge end. The weighbridge is located between two spaced, aligned tracks and has a third track. The three tracks provide a path of train travel. Each wheel sensing device has a component to provide a signal when a wheel passes. Two components are mounted beside the first two tracks a predetermined distance from opposite ends of the third track. The third component is located beside one of the three tracks a predetermined distance from one end of the third track. The control device counts axles passing the first or second component, counts axles entering the nearer end of the weighbridge, and determines the number of axles of a car from the first coincident count of axles. The component of the third wheel sensing device senses an axle while passing through a zone and determines a normal print out of freight car weight if there is a coincident presence of an axle within that zone and an axle at the associated end of the weighbridge for all adjacent axles of each truck.

    • The system is responsive to a signal from a weight computer to selectively move levers on a lever type postage metering machine to postage selecting positions corresponding to computed postage. The system includes a plurality of actuating members with connecting members for embracing the tabs on the ends of the postage selecting or setting levers of the metering machine for moving the levers to the selected positions. The connecting members follow the natural motion of the tabs on the postage selecting levers. The operating members are moved to their selective positions by alternating rotating discs controlled by an alternately driven motor, which is driven in response to a signal from the weight computer with a comparator circuit for comparing and selecting the respective positions of the discs. The discs contain code position indicators which are sensed by code sensing means connected to the computer for operating a latch system for selectively latching and unlatching the respective discs, for permitting them to be driven to selected positions for actuating the postage meter levers.

    • A method of and apparatus for determining and displaying the postal rate for a parcel to be shipped to a destination zone by a selected class of shipment in accordance with the weight of the parcel. A memory is provided with plural sections, each section being substantially associated with a particular class of shipment, and each section storing postal rate data for predetermined weight increments at addressable locations. The address of a location is determined by the parcel weight and the destination zone. Digital weight data is produced as a function of the weight of a parcel placed on the scale and the particular class of shipment and destination zone are selected as desired. The addressed memory location preferably is comprised of first and second parts for storing first and second portions of the composite postal rate data; these first and second parts being read out on a time sharing basis to a display device. The reading out and displaying of postal rate data is inhibited upon the occurrence of one or more of predetermined conditions, including the absence of a parcel on the scale, the removal of a parcel from the scale, the improper selection of a destination zone, the improper selection of a class of shipment or the addressing of an improper memory storage location.Also disclosed are various aspects of the inhibiting feature which is used in this postage scale and particular aspects of the time sharing memory read-out and display.
