    • Electronic scales having an integrated computer including a display for presenting information to a user, an input unit for entering selection data by a user, a memory for storing a plurality of activatable profiles as sets of parameter values for assignment to corresponding sets of parameters, and a data processing unit for controlling the display, the input unit, and the memory, and for determining and processing measured values in accordance with the current activated profile. The measured values are generated during a weighing operation by the user. To determine a profile, a user is requested, over a plurality of successive steps, to select one of several options presented by the display, the combination of the options presented in a step being dependent on the selection made in the preceding step. Then, during the weighing operation, the user is requested, again, over a plurality of successive steps, to perform an action presented by the display. A request, is a function of the type of actual current activated profile, and is made only if the action requested in the preceding step is confirmed as carried out.

    • A dynamic scale has a conveyor, a weighing pan, a weighing cell, sensors and an electronic control unit that, in addition to controlling the conveyor means (4), implements an evaluation of a number measured weight values that are obtained from the weighing cell and performs a measured value correction on the basis of specific parameters, and supplies a corrected weight value to a postage meter machine via an interface. A method for a control of the conveyor, evaluation of the measured values from the weighing cell, and formulation of a valid output weight value includes an overload check that is made by comparing a measured weight value lying in the middle of the number of measured values to at least one overload limit value, and formation of a decision parameter from the measured values, in a validity check, for comparison to at least one shutoff criterion. If the validity check determines that the measured values from the weighing cell are valid, they are used to form the output weight value.

    • A combinatorial weighing method and apparatus in which weight data from N-number of weighing machines containing articles are combined to obtain an optimum combination of weighing machines giving a total combined weight value of articles equal to a preset value Wa or closet to the preset value Wa within preset allowable limits, and in which the articles are discharged from the obtained optimum combination of weighing machines. The method includes starting combinations with i as the initial number of weighing machines in each combination, wherein i represents the number of weighing machines which tends to afford the optimum combination more readily than other numbers of the weighing machines. Combinations which select the i-number of weighing machines from the N-number of weighing machines, are generated continuously and it is determined whether the total weight value of each combination machine falls within the preset allowable limits. A combination which is within the preset allowable limits is stored, and articles are discharged based on the stored optimum combination. The initial value of i is set to N/2 when N is even, to (N/2).+-.0.5 when N is odd, or to a value obtained by performing the following operation: ##EQU1## where Wi (i=1, 2, . . . , N) represents the weight of article batches supplied to each of the weighing machines. For each total weight value of a certain combination that is obtained, the value is ranked as being underweight, proper or overweight, the weight values are counted rank by rank, and the quantity of articles suppled to the weighing hoppers is controlled based on the counted value in each rank. When an optimum combination is not found with the initial number of weighing machines, i is updated based on the counted value in each rank, and processing for selection of an optimum combination is re-executed.

    • A temperature-compensated measuring system employs an internal signal-processor to provide high accuracy measurements, correct over a wide range of temperatures. In a calibration mode, the system employs the signal-processor to provide mathematical constants used to generate a temperature-compensation function. In a measurement mode, signals representing the uncompensated quantity and the system temperature are supplied to the signal-processor, which uses them to generate a temperature-compensation function from which it produces a high-accuracy temperature-corrected value of the measured quantity. In various forms, the invention can be used to measure temperature-compensated force, pressure or acceleration.

    • This invention relates to an improved digital scale arrangement which employs apparatus for generating an electrical analog signal representing the weight on the scale mechanism. The analog signal is then converted to a digital representation of the weight on the scale under control of a microprocessor or microcomputer. The microcomputer then further processes the digital representation and causes it to be displayed. In accordance with the present invention, a fully automatically operating arrangement is provided for verifying the correct operation of the analog portion, the converting portion, and the digital portion of the arrangement. In addition, the arrangement is also employed to automatically correct the span of the scale under control of the results of the verification operation.
