    • In a system for controlling outboard motors each mounted on a boat and each having an internal combustion engine and a shift mechanism, an actuator driving at least one of the shift mechanism and a throttle valve of the engine, and a controller controlling operation of the actuator, comprising: a navigation unit having a steering wheel installed to be freely operable by an operator and a steering angle detector producing an output indicative of a steering angle of the steering wheel, wherein the outboard motors are immovably fastened to the boat, such that each of the controllers controls the operation of the actuator cooperatively based on the output of the steering angle detector, to regulate traveling direction of the boat. With this, it becomes possible to control a traveling direction of the boat based on a steering command issued by the operator, while achieving a compact outboard motor.

    • In a system for controlling outboard motors each mounted on a boat and each having an engine, a steering mechanism, a shift mechanism, an actuator driving at least one of the steering mechanism, the shift mechanism and a throttle valve of the engine, and a controller controlling operation of the actuator, comprising: a steering wheel operable by an operator; a shift/throttle lever operable by the operator; and a manipulated variable detector producing an output indicative of manipulated variable of at least one of the steering wheel and the shift/throttle lever; the manipulated variable detector being separately connected to each of the controllers in the outboard motors through an electric signal line to send the output to the controllers. With this, it becomes possible to control the operation of the actuators in the outboard motors separately for the individual outboard motors with simple structure without identifying the respective outboard motors.

    • A steering system for a water vehicle includes a housing having a substantially cylindrical member, at least one case member extending through the substantially cylindrical member, a column shaft extending through the pair of case members, including at least one elongated hole disposed on opposed side of the column shaft, and being arranged to move relative to the pair of case members and the housing in an axial direction of the column shaft, and a telescoping mechanism partially disposed in the column shaft. One of the pair of case members includes a plurality of detents provided on an inner surface thereof. The telescoping mechanism includes at least one elongated hole disposed at one end portion of the telescoping mechanism, a locking pin extending through the at least one elongated hole in the telescoping mechanism and the at least one elongated hole in the column shaft, and a lever disposed at an opposite end portion from the one end portion of the telescoping mechanism. The lever is movable to move the locking pin into and out of engagement with respective ones of the plurality of detents to enable the column shaft to be selectively moved relative to the pair of case members and the housing and fixed at a desired location relative to the pair of case members and the housing.

    • A device and a method for laterally steering a streamer cable towed underwater behind a seismic survey vessel. The device includes a cable-steering assembly rotatably attached to a streamer cable. The assembly includes a body to which one or more wings are mounted. The wings are arranged to pivot about pivot axes. The assembly is ballasted so that the pivot axes of the wings are largely in a vertical plane. A conventional cable-leveling bird is converted to one version of a cable-steering device by ballasting to maintain the pivot axes of the bird's wings largely vertical. With an orientation sensor for sensing the orientation of the wings, the cable-steering device adjusts the angle of the wings to provide a sideward component of force to steer the streamer.

    • In an outboard motor control system, an electronic control unit executes ordinary navigation in which the operation of at least one among a steering motor, throttle motor and shift motor is controlled in accordance with an operator command inputted from the steering wheel or shift/throttle lever (steering command, shift position change command or engine speed regulation command of the outboard motor) and executes autopilot navigation in which the boat is automatically navigated by controlling the operation of the individual electric motors based on boat position information inputted from a GPS plotter and the desired position of the boat. This simplifies the configuration for conducting both manual navigation and automatic navigation and avoids making the system larger or more complicated to install, while including boat speed regulation and stopping capability among the autopilot features.
