    • A power operated wrench for acuating the drawbars on machine tools, such as vertical spindle milling machines, which permits the operator to move a single handle, and after release of a safety interlock move a pneumatic wrench into position to engage the drawbar nut and either tighten or loosen the drawbar depending on the direction of motion of the operator handle. The mechanical operation permits the operator to rotate the operator handle in the same direction as would be done if the drawbar was being manually tightened or loosened, in order to tighten or loosen the drawbar under power. The safety interlock prevents movement of the power motor into engagement with the drawbar until the machine has been shut off.

    • A chuck attachable to a drill powered by a reversible motor, is adapted for use in driving lag rods into wooden supports and has an axial bore extending therethrough which is partly threaded from one end to receive the machine-threaded end of a lag rod. A plug member is screwed into the threaded end of the bore of the chuck and has a formation enabling it to be so turned as to be seated at the inner end of the threads for engagement by the extremity of the machine threaded end of the lag rod. In order to so reduce the frictional engagement between the plug member and the extremity of the lag rod, the area of the engaged extremities is limited thus to ensure the release of the lag rod when the motor is reversed after the lag rod has been driven into the support to a desired extent.

Additionally so that limited axial play and efficient hammer action may be obtained, the clamping surfaces of the chuck jaws are each provided with a row of projections parallel to the drill chuck axis.

    • A tool clamping device used with a machine tool is provided for clamping a tool on a tool spindle. In a bore of the tool spindle, there is axially movably received a guide bush which is formed with a recess for permitting steel balls to retract toward radial outward directions. A retainer for holding the steel balls is received in a bore of the guide bush for axial movement relative thereto. The guide bush is connected to a draw bar which is axially movable in the bore of the tool spindle and which is spring-biased toward a rearward direction of the tool spindle. Thus, when the draw bar is spring-drawn toward the rear end of the spindle, the steel balls are restrained from radial outward movements through engagements with the internal surface of the guide bush thereby to clamp the pull stud of the tool. However, when the draw bar is moved toward the front end of the spindle against the biasing force of the spring, the steel balls are retracted into the recess of the guide bush thereby to release the pull stud of the tool.

    • An automatic draw bar for removably securing machine tools carried by a tool holder within the spindle of a milling machine or the like, in which the tool holder is formed with an internally threaded bore. The spindle is provided with an elongated bore having a recess at its end to receive the shank of the tool holder. A hollow draw bar is slidably carried within the spindle and is exteriorly threaded at one end with a thread engagable with the tool holder interior thread. An elongated draw bar expander slidably carried within the draw bar and responsive to a source of linear power is adapted to couple the threads on the draw bar and tool holder to draw the tool holder into frictional engagement with the spindle upon activation of the power source.
