    • A circuit arrangement for igniting and operating a high-pressure discharge lamp is provided with a switching device, inductive device and a rectifier which together form a Buck converter, connected to input terminals for connection to a supply source and output terminals for connection of the lamp. The lamp is supplied with a current through periodic switching of the switching device alternatively into a conducting and a non-conducting state by means of a switch-on and switch-off signal, respectively. The inductive device includes a primary and a secondary winding with the secondary winding forming part of an integration network for generating the switch-off signal. The secondary winding also forms part of a voltage divider network for generating the switch-on signal. A very simple circuit arrangement is thereby achieved.

    • A pre-converter is connected with AC power line voltage and provides DC voltage across a pair of DC terminals. A current-limiting inductor, a self-oscillating parallel-resonant inverter, and a periodically activated FET switch are series-connected with one another across the DC terminals. The inverter provides a high-frequency (e.g., 20-30 kHz) substantially sinusoidal output voltage across its output terminals. Each of plural rapid-start fluorescent lamps is connected across the output terminals by way of a current-limiting capacitor. The magnitude of the resulting lamp current depends on the RMS magnitude of the output voltage. In turn, for a given load condition, this RMS magnitude depends on the average magnitude of the unidirectional current drawn by the inverter from the DC terminals; which average magnitude is determined by the ON/OFF duty-cycle of the FET switch. The FET switch is turned ON/OFF at twice the frequency of the inverter's output voltage. By adjusting the ON/OFF-ratio, the average magnitude of the unidirectional current supplied to the inverter is correspondingly adjusted, thereby resulting in a corresponding adjustment in the magnitude of the lamp current.

    • To reduce network harmonics upon connecting a fluorescent lamp (LP1) with a power network rectifier (2) and a push-pull frequency generator (3) and a series resonance circuit (4) to the network, a harmonic filter is connected in the circuit with the fluorescent lamp (LP1) or lamps (LP1, LP2). The harmonic filter includes two diodes (D8, D9), connected in forward current passing direction to the power rectifier (2), and two capacitors (C7, C8) connected, respectively, between the serially connected diodes and a center tap (M1) between the push-pull transistors directly and beyond an inductance forming part of a series resonance circuit (4) for the lamps. In parallel to the two diodes, two further diodes (D10, D11) are provided, having a center tap (M4) which is connected over a capacitor (C9) also to the center tap between the transistors of the push-pull frequency generator (3). Preferably, the capacity value of the further capacitor (C9) is about 0.2 times the total capacity value in the harmonic filter circuit.

    • A variable frequency DC to DC converter generates a pulsed, variable magnitude output voltage where the frequency of the pulsed output voltage varies with changes in the magnitude of the output voltage. An energy storage capacitor is coupled between the converter coupled inductor and strobe flash lamp or other gaseous discharge tube and is periodically discharged through the flash lamp. A variable impedance device in the form of a capacitor is coupled in series with the flow of current from the coupled inductor into the energy storage capacitor to provide a low impedance current flow path when energy is transferred from the coupled inductor into the capacitor and to provide a high impedance current flow path between the converter DC voltage input terminals and the energy storage capacitor when energy is transferred from the capacitor into the strobe flash lamp.
