    • A method for optimizing an established call routed across a network from an originating exchange to a destination exchange over a first connection path. The first connection path features a path metric of interest, such as administrative weight. A second connection path is identified which features an improved path metric, the path is made operative and the call is directed over the second connection path. Thereafter, the first connection path may be dismantled. The second connection path is preferably identified by signalling a call set-up message over the network, wherein the message incorporates a reporting field and each transiting exchange propagating the message updates the reporting field until it specifies the path metric of the replacement connection path traversed by the call set-up message. A connect message incorporating the reporting field back is signalled back to the originating exchange from the destination exchange. If the reporting field specifies an improved path metric the replacement connection path is then identified; otherwise the process may be repeated until such time as the second path is found. Alternatively, if the call set-up message includes a desired connection path metric value and the network is configured to clear back the call set-up message to the originating exchange in the event it is unable to identify any connection path to the destination exchange satisfying the desired path metric, the replacement connection path may be automatically accepted.

    • A cross-connect switch for implementing local number portability between a current local service provider originating switch and a desired local service provider ported switch. The cross-connect switch comprises an Originating Dial Tone (ODT) port, a Ported Dial Tone (PDT) port, a Main Distribution Frame (MDF) port, a switch, and a controller. The ODT port receives a first line from the originating switch associated with a subscriber's directory number. The PDT port receives a second line from the porting switch associated with said subscriber's directory number. The MDF port connects the cross-connect switch to a MDF associated with the originating switch and the ported switch. The controller is in operative communication with the switch, ODT, PDT and MDF ports. The controller includes a processor programmed to receive a predetermined signal from the ODT port and, in response, establish a communication channel between the PDT port and the MDF port, and open a communication channel between the ODT port and the MDF port. With the present device, the programmable switch can be implemented and triggered remotely to coordinate local number portability migration requests from a current local service provider to a desired local service provider.

    • A service execution environment for an advanced interactive voice response (IVR) service node. The service execution environment functions within a next generation service node (NGSN) IVR platform in a telecommunications network. The environment uses individual service-independent building blocks (SIBBs) that allow the creation of customer applications with simple references to the individual primitive SIBBs or composite SIBBs, with branching available. Functional calls to a sequence of SIBBs along with customer specific data stored in a database comprise a complete customer application. When a call is received by an IVR service node, the application is executed by calling the SIBBs to apply certain treatments to the call. The use of the SIBBs allows increased efficiency in the network because calls can be routed to any NGSN node. Each NGSN needs no customization to perform a particular customer application. The service execution environment decreases the time to market of new customer applications and decreases the turn-around time for modifications to existing customer applications.

    • A method and apparatus for establishing a suppressed ringing connection between a server and customer premises equipment, wherein the server is connected to a first switch and the customer premises equipment is connected to a second switch, different from said first switch. The switch connected to the server has translation information identifying the trunk to the server as a server trunk. Signaling between the server, which is not connected to the Common Channel Signaling Network (CCS7), and the second switch is performed according to the protocols used for sending messages to a switch connected to the target customer premises equipment that is at the other end of the suppressed ringing connection. The first switch converts signals received from the server into a common channel signaling format for transmission to the second switch, serving the target CPE. The second switch then establishes a suppressed ringing connection to the target CPE. Alternatively, a dial-up connection can be used to connect the server to the first switch. Advantageously, these arrangements free the server from having to provide trunks to all switches connected to target CPEs. They make it possible, for example, for one server to serve CPEs throughout the countly via one, or a small number of switches.
