    • An apparatus is used for cutting guide tubes of a nuclear fuel assembly below an end-piece and removing the end-piece. The apparatus includes a mount which may be removably locked and centered on the end-piece. Cutting tools insertable in the guide tubes each include a hollow shaft whose end part is split by longitudinal slits into radially expandable fingers each having a cutting edge. A stem movable axially along each shaft cooperates therewith for spreading the fingers out radially and retracting them. The shafts are mounted for rotation on a plate which is vertically movable with respect to the mount by a jack and carries a motor for simultaneously rotating all shafts. The shafts are carried by an expansion unit movable vertically with respect to the plate by a jack and including the stems. A method for separating the end-piece with the apparatus is also described.

    • A fixture for removing a top nozzle of a reconstitutable fuel assembly held in a fixed position within a work station includes a pair of guide openings in two diagonally opposed corners of its base to movably mount the base on a pair of upstanding guide members of the work station and on the top nozzle in alignment therewith. Also, the fixture includes a pair of hollow expandable split sleeves with wedge pins inserted therein which are operable to lock the fixture to the top nozzle. An arrangement of drive and driven gears connected with a plurality of reaction pins mounted on the base of the fixture are operable to move the fixture base with the top nozzle thereto away from the guide thimbles of the fuel assembly and thereby cause the top nozzle adapter plate to release its connection with the guide thimbles. However, prior to removing the top nozzle, a plurality of stop devices of the fixture are preset and operable for establishing a reference representing the distance between the fixture and work station so that the top nozzle can later be replaced at the same axial position on the fuel assembly it was at before removal.

    • A device for unfastening and lifting a top nozzle subassembly from the guide thimbles of a reconstitutable fuel assembly includes hollow gripper tubes having open lower ends, spaced yokes mounting the gripper tubes, pull rods disposed in the gripper tubes, end plugs attached to lower ends of the pull rods and disposed at the open lower ends of the gripper tubes, stop plugs stationarily disposed in the gripper tubes spaced above their open lower ends, elastomer blocks disposed in the gripper tubes between the end and stop plugs, and inner tubes disposed within the gripper tubes about the elastomer blocks. Lower end portions of the gripper tubes are capable of insertion into sleeves of the top nozzle subassembly to positions therein located adjacent to threaded lower ends of the sleeves. The pull rods are disposed within the gripper tubes for axial movement upwardly and downwardly within the tubes, with the end plugs being extendible into and from the gripper tube open lower ends upon such movement of the pull rods. In such arrangement, movement of each pull rod upwardly displaces the end plug thereon toward the stop plug and causes diametric expansion of the block which, in turn, causes diametric expansion of the gripper tube into engagement with the sleeve adjacent to the threaded lower end thereof, whereas movement of the pull rod downwardly displaces the end plug thereon away from the stop plug and allows diametric contraction of the block which, in turn, allows diametric contraction of the gripper tube out of engagement with the sleeve. Each gripper tube lower end portion contains spaced axial slots for facilitating diametric expansion of the gripper tube which enables subsequent unthreading of the sleeve from the guide thimble. Also, the inner tube about the elastomer block is axially slotted and oriented such that its slots are circumferentially displaced from those of the gripper tube so as to prevent the elastomer block from extruding outwardly through the slots of the gripper tube when the block is diametrically expanded.

    • An improved tube cutter is provided for cutting off a tube section formed by two concentric tubes mechanically bulged together wherein the cut to be made is adjacent the bulged area. The tube cutter includes an elongated housing formed by two matable portions having longitudinal matching recesses which define an axial bore through the housing and transverse matching recesses which define a circumferential groove that accommodates the bulged area when the housing portions are clamped together about the tube section. Each of the housing portions carry a cutter bit which is located adjacent the groove and is extendable into the axial bore as the tube cutter manually rotated about the tube section so as to make a cut through the tube section adjacent the bulged area.
