    • An apparatus for developing photosensitive material has a processing bath, and transporting devices for advancing several strips and/or sheets of photosensitive material through the bath side-by-side. The strips and sheets have various widths. A sensing system is provided to sense the surface area of the material advanced through the bath. The sensing system includes a plurality of spaced sensors arranged in a row which traverses the path of the material. The sensors are designed to sense the widths of the strips and/or sheets, and adjacent ones of the sensors are spaced from one another by a distance smaller than the magnitude of the smallest difference between the widths of the strips and/or sheets. The lengths of the strips and/or sheets are taken into account by a length measuring unit which determines the frequency with which the sensors scan the strips and/or sheets. When a predetermined total surface area is reached, a signal is sent to a control unit which opens a valve for a vessel containing a regenerating solution for the bath. A predetermined quantity of the regenerating solution then enters the bath.

    • Apparatus for applying liquid developer to a latent image-bearing surface and, after image development has been accomplished, for blow-drying the surface. Such apparatus comprises a housing against which the support material is clamped. The housing has a chamber that is open to the support material and which may be selectively interconnected to a source of air under pressure and to a reservoir containing development liquid. When connected with the reservoir of development liquid, a flow defining surface is positioned adjacent to the image-bearing material to form a flow passage for the liquid over the material. An electric potential may be applied to the flow defining surface to provide a development electrode. After development, drying air is introduced into the chamber to remove, squeegie and carry away any fluid remaining on the surface of the support material. Means are provided to wipe the flow defining surface clean of development liquid and to remove that surface from exposure to the drying air. After drying, a member which forms a restricted-flow air passage across the support material is drawn over a surface to wipe such member clean of any extraneous developer components.

    • A processor for photopolymerizable films is described. In this processor, film is fed, image up, in a straight through path by a series of soft rubber covered transport rollers first into a development section, then to a rinse section, and finally to a dryer section. In the developer section, developer is delivered through spray pipes which maintain a curtain of developer cascading over the top rolls at both the entrance and exit of the developer section. The film is thus maintained flooded in a precisely controlled, well defined surface region such that the time in which the film undergoes development may be accurately controlled by varying film speed. The film is then rinsed in the rinse section by a high impact spray system and then dried.

    • Metal imaged media such as printing plate or printed circuit boards are produced by (a) forming a catalytic nuclei image on a copy medium; (b) uniformly and rapidly wetting the copy medium with a physical developer; (c) subjecting the copy medium and a thin layer of the physical developer to a rocking motion to cause the developer to flow across the image in predominantly laminar flow to provide a substantially uniform source of metal ion from the physical developer over all areas of the surface of the medium to form a metal image in the catalytic nuclei image areas; and (d) washing the developed copy medium to remove substantially all developer from the copy medium. In a preferred process the catalytic nuclei image is formed by exposure of a thin photosensitive layer. Preferably, the final metal image is adherently and intimately bonded to the support and used on a lithographic printing press to produce multiple copies. The invention also includes the apparatus utilized to carry out these processes.

    • Mounted on a supporting block in spaced parallel relationship are two short shafts slotted for the reception of the rearward portions of sharp-edged resilient film squeegee blades. At least one of these shafts is pivotally mounted and its squeegee blade is urged toward the squeegee blade of the other shaft by a spring element, such as an elastic band. The liquid on the film, such as motion picture film, traveling between the two blades is removed by the sharp-edged portions thereof without damage to the film itself while the pivotal mounting enables the pivoted blade shaft or shafts to rotate so that the blades thereof adapt themselves to variations in the thickness of the film without relying wholly on the resilience of the blades. Furthermore, because of such pivoting, the blades are easily cleaned.

Between the applying plates are pressure or squeegee rolls for removing expended solutions, drip pans for the solutions, cover plates extending over the applying plates and flexible sealing strips at the entrance and exit lips of the cover plates, which strips are adapted to press against the back surface of the photographic elements. Metering weirs control the rate at which treating solution is expended. The apparatus can have a selfthreading drying chamber adjacent the final solution applying plate.

    • A latent image on a sheet or strip of film is rapidly processed to produce a dry, developed film by positioning it between a pair of spaced platens. The one platen is moved into contact with the film and then the other platen is moved into position so as to clamp the film therebetween. The other platen is also provided with a resilient frame member which provides a seal with respect to the support side of the film. A recess in the one platen is interconnected to the processing solutions through a metering valve so that each solution is moved into the recess in a required order so as to develop the latent image area. The flow of solution is maintained at a generally consistent and uniform temperature from the point of introduction into the recess to the point at which it is withdrawn after processing has been completed. A suction applied to a configuration of passages in the other platen draws the film toward the facing surfaces so as to maintain it in a speced and generally parallel relation to the recess in the one platen. The uniform space so provided permits the flow of solution to be moved across and in contact with the emulsion surface of the film.
