    • A link chain for use in the continuously variable transmission of the power train in a motor vehicle is assembled of pairs of composite identical or dissimilar links each having a stack of apertured plates, and of coupling units employing pairs of non-circular pins extending through registering portions of apertures in the respective stacks of plates. The pins are designed to cooperate with the plates to limit the extend of inward and outward pivotability of links of the respective pairs from positions of alignment, and the pins carry stops which act alone or cooperate with diaphragm springs or with other types of springs to prevent wobbling of the plates. The plates can be provided with projections which cooperate with the pins to limit the extent of pivotability of the pairs of links relative to each other and/or to prevent jamming of pairs of links in angular positions from which they cannot return to the positions of alignment. Each plate is traversed by two pairs of pins.

    • A drive belt is disposed to transmit power between a pair of sheaves. The sheaves each have an axially adjustable member to vary the transmission ratio between the sheaves. The drive belt has a plurality of block members retained in endless fashion by a pivotal link chain mechanism. The blocks are loaded in compression during a portion of the travel between the sheaves and the chain is loaded in tension during another portion of the travel between the sheaves. The blocks transmit power when loaded in compression and the chain transmits power when loaded in tension. The drive belt therefore transmits power during both portions of travel between the sheaves. A lubrication and cooling liquid is supplied to one sheave at a location near the contact point of the drive belt.

    • The chain is constructed of plastic modules connected in end to end relationship. It is claimed for all chain uses, including but not limited to use as a drive chain. Each individual module is without moving parts and, in most drive chain applications, has a cavity between its front and rear ends for receiving a tooth of a sprocket wheel. Each pair of adjacent modules has a transverse pin or pins extending from one module into a transverse pin-receiving socket or sockets of the other module so as to form a rotatable joint between the modules. Various means of constructing and joining the modules are disclosed. The plastic bicycle sprocket ring cluster which the plastic chain permits consists of stair-stepped multiple concentric rings of teeth which can be wider than a conventional bicycle chain now allows and which together can support each other by means of a common plastic infrastructure. The chain and cluster are light-weight and non-rusting; they can be also self-lubricating and colorful.

    • A guide link for use in a power transmission chain having a plurality of other links. The other links have a pair of spaced apertures and have a thickness and a hardness. The guide link has a pair of spaced apertures surrounded by a pair of upward extending toes. The toes have an outside flank and an inside flank with the inside flanks joined by a rounded crotch. The root of the crotch depends below the uppermost portion of the apertures. The thickness and hardness of the guide link is different from the other links so that the guide link has a yield load that is less than the yield load of the other links.

    • A three-way laced chain (40) has a plurality of links (32, 43, 45) that arerranged in rows (A, B and C) that extend across the width of the chain (40) where similarly located end regions of the links (42, 43, 45) are offset. A plurality of first (43), second (42) and third (45) links are positioned in substantially parallel relationship with respect to each other. The second links (42) and third links (45) are positioned in the chain (40) to vary the spacing between adjacent links (42, 43, 45) and to vary distribution of the loads on the links (42, 43, 45) whereby the loads on the links (42, 43, 45) are substantially balanced across the width of the chain (40) and bending of the connecting elements (51) is substantially reduced.
