    • A ship has interchangeable mission modules. For example, a ship has a frame with a mission-module bay disposed therein. The bay is operable to receive a mission module having a mission-module system and an interface that facilitates the coupling between the mission-module system and the ship. As such, a plurality of different types of mission modules can be interchanged quickly and easily to provide the ship with different mission capabilities. Each mission-module is generally self-contained such that all the equipment necessary to perform the specific mission is contained within the single mission-module. Each mission-module is either a single unit or multiple units combined together to form an integrated unit. Thus, the ship is capable of transitioning from one mission to another simply by ejecting one mission module and replacing with another mission module.

    • A ship and associated methods of formation with vessels having connectable hulls. In an example embodiment, a method of operating a ship includes providing a plurality of vessels over water, each comprising at least two spaced-apart hull sections defining a cavity when the vessel is afloat. Each hull section on each vessel is configurable as a portion of a coupling mechanism with fore and aft portions of each hull section reduced in width relative to intermediate hull section portions. Pairs of hull section fore portions may be lapped with and connected to pairs of hull section aft portions on different vessels to form complete coupling mechanisms which connect vessels to one another. Accordingly, the plurality of vessels can form a single assembly and power can be transferred between vessels to move the vessels through water in a tandem arrangement.

    • A modular enclosure system particularly suited for use aboard a ship comprises a modular enclosure which is easily installed into and removed from an exoskeletal frame that is shock-mounted to a fixed surface, such as the deck of a ship. An enclosure is installed by placing it within a respective frame via complementary guide rails. A securing mechanism locks the enclosure into place within the frame, and an ejection mechanism enables an enclosure to be easily removed for purposes of maintenance, repair or reconfiguration, or in the event of an emergency. The enclosures are preferably water-tight and float if ejected into the sea. Rubberized boots surrounding all points of entry enhance the survivability of the enclosures in a nuclear/biological/chemical (NBC) environment. Shock-mounting the frames to the deck eliminates the need to shock-mount individual pieces of equipment and enables the use of cheaper and more readily available commercial off-the-shelf equipment. A number of frames and enclosures can be placed side by side on the deck of a ship to form a superstructure. By bolting outer panels over the exposed ends of the enclosures, double-walled protection is provided against shrapnel and munitions.

    • In order to facilitate temporary storing of oil in an underwater receptacle, for instance the pontoon of a semi-submersible vessel, the receptacle is subdivided by bulkheads into a series of tanks. A first tank is connected to a production unit by way of a conduit, or by way of a branch pipe to a delivery conduit. The tank located remotely with respect to the conduit communicates with the surrounding sea by an opening. The bulkheads are provided with upper and lower openings, respectively, and a screened passage extends between these openings. When oil is supplied to the first tank static or pump pressure will expel water through opening, and oil will fill the tanks in due order in the direction away from the first tank. When oil is withdrawn, water from the surrounding sea will flow in through opening and further on through the tanks towards the first tank.
