    • A buckle pretensioner for a vehicle seat belt system of the type that is mounted on a vehicle seat includes a blocking device for preventing the movement of a movable member of an inertial starting mechanism that controls the operation of the pretensioner from releasing the pretensioner driving device. The blocking device includes a solenoid and an electric power circuit for energizing the solenoid having a seat slide switch that is responsive to movement of the seat release lever for controlling the energy state of the solenoid so that the blocking device prevents movement of the movable member in response to operation of the seat release lever to release the seat for adjustment and a delay circuit for maintaining the energy state of the solenoid established by operation of the seat slide switch for a predetermined period of time after the seat slide switch has been operated. The power circuit may also have a switch that is responsive to insertion of a buckle tongue into the buckle for controlling the energy state of the solenoid such that the blocking device prevents movement of the movable member of the inertial starting mechanism when the buckle tongue is not inserted into the buckle.

    • In a belt pretensioner for safety belt systems in vehicles in which the belt buckle is disposed on a vehicle seat and the belt pretensioner engages said buckle, the problem is encountered that the vehicle-sensitive sensor mass mounted movably on the vehicle seat also responds to decelerations of the vehicle seat relatively to the vehicle bodywork. To prevent any erroneous activation caused thereby, the sensor mass is secured until occurrence of a first predetermined vehicle deceleration value which is lower than a second vehicle deceleration value at which the activation of the drive of the belt pretensioner by the movement of the sensor mass occurs. On the other hand, the securing of the sensor mass is cancelled on exceeding of the first vehicle deceleration value. The cancelling of the securing of the sensor mass is ensured by a separate deceleration sensor which is mounted directly on the vehicle bodywork, for example beneath the vehicle seat.

    • A sensor for seat belt systems comprises a casing, an inertia body having at least a portion received in the casing for displacement axially thereof, and an output member received in the casing for displacement axially thereof and having a portion extending out of the casing so that displacement of the output member is transmitted to the outside of the casing. A set spring engaged between the casing and the inertia body biases the inertia body to a set position in the casing, and an actuator spring engaged between the casing and the output member biases the output member in a direction to displace it along the casing. A latch mechanism composed of two pairs of levers arranged in series and engaged between the output member and the inertia body prevents displacement of the output member in the absence of displacement of the inertia body in response to acceleration in excess of a predetermined acceleration.

    • A pre-tensioner arrangement applies tension to a safety belt in response to deceleration of a vehicle. A spring stores a force which is to be applied to the safety belt. A trigger mechanism comprises a lever which exhibits a mechanical advantage, one end of the lever engaging the spring, or an element associated with the spring, to retain the spring in a compressed state, and the other end of the lever engaging an over-dead-center linkage. An inertia mass is provided to engage the over-dead-center linkage to move it through the dead-center condition to release the lever and cause the spring to be released when severe deceleration is experienced.

    • A seat belt retractor system comprising a seat belt retractor unit having a winding spool for winding a seat belt thereon, and a seat belt tightening unit for tightening the seat belt upon detection of occurrence of a vehicle crash. The seat belt tightening unit is placed lower than the seat belt retractor unit, for instance, one on top of a floor tunnel and the other on a side wall of the floor tunnel, whereby the seat belt can be favorably passed closely across the waist and the shoulder of the vehicle occupant and a favorable occupant restraining capability of the seat belt is ensured. If the seat belt tightening unit uses an explosive propellant, it may be placed externally of the passenger compartment, for instance on the external wall surface of the floor tunnel, so as to eliminate any ill effects, such as explosive sound and combustion gas, which may be produced as a result of the combustion of the propellant.
