    • A method for lining the interior of a container with plastic sheet material. An open topped container is elevated upon a support through a passage in a lower die member into contact with the under surface of a sheet of heated thermoplastic material overlying the upper end of the passage. A plug assist member is then employed to deform the sheet into conformation with the interior of the container. Upon withdrawal of the plug assist member, an upper die member is lowered into shearing relationship with the lower die member to shear the sheet around the upper periphery of the container. The support, with the lined container in place, is then further elevated to raise the lined container upwardly through the opening thus sheared in the sheet and through a passage extending vertically through the upper die member. The plastic lined container is discharged from the apparatus by pushing it transversely across the flat upper surface of the upper die member.

    • A label is applied to a cup by superimposing a foil tape on a label tape that has a plurality of transverse breaking lines. The tapes are heated to "floatingly" connect the label tape to the foil tape and are then introduced into a deep-drawing apparatus so that the punch thereof may cyclically sever a single label and at the same time form a cup. If the breaking line is fed to the longitudinal axis of the deep-drawing apparatus, the label will be applied to two sides of the cup. If the label tape is fed so that the breaking line is approximately at the far edge of the deep-drawing apparatus then the label will be applied to only one side of the cup. The label tape may be longitudinally slit so that a plurality of cups may be simultaneously deep-drawn.

    • In the production of a wall covering board which is shaped and composed of a substrate of corrugated paperboard and a decorative and/or protective skin layer, a hot-press for bonding of the skin to the substrate either simultaneously with or subsequently to shaping of the substrate is combined with a skin material support mechanism and a drag mechanism including a sheet-grasping device mounted on the piston rod of a piston actuator. The support mechanism supports, with friction force, a belt of a sheet material employed as the skin at its one end horizontally on one side of the press. The piston rod is horizontally extended from the opposite side of the press to traverse the press and allow the grasping device to grasp the supported end of the belt and then retreated until the grasping device returns to the opposite side of the press, so that the belt is stretched between the stationary and movable dies of the press. By applying heat and pressure to the stretched belt through the movable die, the belt, i.e. the skin, is bonded to the substrate on the stationary die without acquiring wrinkles.

    • A method of coating a contoured portion of a generally porous molded pulp article having sloping side and flat bottom wall portions with generally imperforate thermoplastic material to achieve a superior bonded product. First the article to be coated is placed against an open-face suction die, a flat continuous sheet of thermoplastic material is then placed in overlying relationship with the exposed portion of the die-supported article, the temperature of the thermoplastic material is raised to the range where it is sufficiently ductile to closely conform with the contoured portion of the molded pulp article, the thermoplastic material is suction adhered into intimate physical contact with the article without undesireable pleats or folds, a closed chamber is created around the article and its adhered thermoplastic material with the open-face suction die forming a portion thereof, the pressure within the closed chamber is increased to act against the exposed portion of the thermoplastic material with a pressure at least twice atmospheric pressure, and finally the temperature of the thermoplastic material continues to be raised until a mechanical bond with the contacted pulp is effected which is characterized in the finished product by a substantially uniform penetration of thermoplastic material into the adjacent pulp material on the sloping side as well as the flat bottom wall portions and the penetration of fibrous pulp material into the adjacent side of the thermoplastic material is also substantially uniform as to both quantity and depth of penetration on the side as well as the bottom wall portions so that a substantially equal amount of force is required to forceably separate the thermoplastic as a sheet from a given area of the bottom wall portions and from a given area of the side wall portions, and so that a substantially uniform amount of pulp material per area unit adheres to the thermoplastic material from the side as well as the bottom wall portions at any place over the bonded surface of the thermoplastic material when it is forceably separated as a sheet from the remainder of the product.
