    • The invention relates to a method and a device for operating a screen wheel filter for highly viscous melts having pressures >10 bar and temperatures >90° C. which shall be further developed in such a way that less of the highly viscous melt is wasted and that the operation of the screen wheel filter can be made more economical. For this purpose the screen wheel (3) according to the invention is rotationally driven at least one complete revolution, with respect to one of the screen inserts (12) located in the melt channel (10), before the particular screen insert (12) is replaced and/or backflushed, and wherein the drive speed and drive cycling for the screen wheel (3) are set in dependence on the thermal or oxidative decomposition behavior of the particular melt in such a way that, when the particular screen insert (12) reenters the melt channel (10) of the screen wheel filter (1), the melt remaining in the particular screen insert (12) has experienced thermal decomposition or oxidative decomposition of ≦3% cleaved molecular chains, preferably ≦1% cleaved molecular chains.

    • A self-cleaning screen includes a rotatable drum made of mesh material and an inlet pipe extending through a front end of the drum. A flotation structure supports the drum with the inlet pipe and the lower part of the drum submerged during use. A cleaning spray system located within the drum receives cleaning water through a hollow shaft supporting a rear end of the drum. Spray nozzles located within an upper part of the drum above the water level direct the cleaning water radially outward to dislodge debris from the screen. The front end of the drum includes an annular ring and a rubber seal extending radially inwardly from the annular ring to engage the inlet pipe. A drive belt extends around the annular ring to rotate the drum. A plurality of rollers engage an outer surface of the annular ring to support the drum for rotation about a horizontal axis.

A barrier extends between the inner member and the outer member at an end portion of the third annular passageway. The barrier of the biomass separator body is configured to direct biomass from the third annular passageway toward an excess biomass discharge.
