摘要： Erbium doped fiber amplifiers (ERDAs) optically couple optical signals between free-space and fiber optic links of a terrestrial optical communication network. The optical gain of transmitting and receiving ERDAs is controlled to achieve good optical signal communication. Control occurs in response to signals received at the transmitting and receiving ends of the links. Control, status and management information may be communicated optically between link head stations. The physical position of transceivers at opposite ends of the link optical signal paths is also controlled.

The MEMS device may be effectively used as a variable attenuator and beam splitter. Various different actuators can be used. The device comprises a switch element, which may include a detector, an emitter array, and a switch controller. The detector is adapted to detect optical signals and is positioned to receive light from a source. The emitter array is positioned to transmit light to a plurality of targets. The emitter comprises at least one emitter and a modulator array. The modulator array selectively allows light to pass through the modulator array. The switch controller is in communication with the detector and the emitter array. The switch controller is adapted to cause the emitter array to generate the detected signal. The switch elements are grouped in an array and dichroic beam splitters may be used to reflect predetermined ranges of wavelengths to the individual switch elements.

摘要： The present invention provides an optical signal add/drop apparatus comprising: an optical signal multiplexing/demultiplexing portion comprising a plurality of 2null2 channel unit devices which are arranged in a straight line and having first and second dualcore ferrules having two optical fibers disposed to be symmetrical to each other at an identical distance from an optical axis for transmitting optical signals, a wavelength division filter disposed between first and second lenses for selectively transmitting or reflecting only the optical signals having specific wavelengths, first and second grin lenses for collimating or focusing the optical signal transmitted or reflected from said wavelength division filter and then transmitting the signal to the first and second dual-core optical fibers; and a switch module having unit 2null2 switches connected to two optical fibers of the second dual-core ferrule of each of the unit devices of said optical signal multiplexing/demultiplexing portion; wherein the switch module can drop simultaneously the optical signals demultiplexed on each of the unit devices or transmit them to the output channels continuously according to the connection state of each of 2null2 switches of the switch modules and then transmit them to output channels through each of the unit devices when the optical signals are added. The add/drop apparatus of the present invention has the advantages of low cost and compact size as it requires a few numbers of unit devices.

Inside the optical beam switch, a reflecting device is located behind each of the two fiber optic beam deflection arrays and used to reflect the light beams between the two fiber optic beam deflection arrays. Front access to the two fiber optic beam deflection arrays is then readily available whether the optical beam switch is mounted horizontally or vertically in the rack assembly.

摘要： A WDM add/drop device for use in an optic communications system for adding and dropping optical wavelengths from a multiple-wavelength optical system. The device includes a set of lenses, a planar grating wavelength multiplexer and a micromirror array switchable for individual wavelengths of the multiple-wavelength signal between a transmit mode and a reflect mode. The grating angularly demultiplexes a multiple-wavelength optical signal in a first direction and the individual wavelengths are processed by the micromirror array and directed to the grating in a second direction. The micromirror array will either reflect select wavelengths to a first port or transmit select wavelengths to a second port. In a preferred embodiment, ports on a first multiport circulator input the multiple-wavelength optical signal to the WDM add/drop device and output the multiple-wavelength optical signal from the WDM add/drop device. A second multiport circulator provides to-be-added wavelengths to the WDM add/drop device and removes to-be-dropped wavelengths from the WDM add/drop device.
