    • A data reading apparatus and method of operating the data reading apparatus. The data reading apparatus is adapted to reading data stored inside an optical storage device. The data reading apparatus has a light source and an image sensor. The light source emits light and illuminates the read-out section of the optical storage device. The image sensor captures the reflected light from the read-out section of the optical storage device to form an image. The data reader may further incorporate an image processor for receiving the image from the image sensor and converting the image into digital data before outputting the data to a host. The forgoing image sensor includes a linear image semsor.

    • A method and apparatus utilizing a multiple quantum well modulator/emitter/detector pixel in a bilinear array permits reading or writing to an optical disc in parallel such that information may either be written to or read from an optical disc within one revolution of the optical disc. Thus while existing DVD and CDROM systems operate by sensing the contents of a spiral track, parallel readout afforded by the multiple quantum well modulator/emitter/detector provides as much as 1,000:1 advantage over single detector systems, with the biasing of the modulator/emitter/detector device determining whether the device is an emitter, detector or modulator. The co-location of the modulator/emitter/detector in a single device permits arranging devices in a linear array which is disposed over the optical disc for the parallel read/write functions.

    • An optical data storage system utilize a fully or partially transmissive data storage medium or disk. The optical system includes a platform capable of moving either radially or pivotally relative to the disk. A head has a first and a second optical arms secured to the platform. One optical arm is positioned below the storage medium, and the other optical arm is positioned above the storage medium. One of the two optical arms includes a light source connected to the platform for generating a collimated light beam, and a first reflective mirror distally connected to the platform for reflecting the collimated light beam toward the storage medium. The other optical arm includes a photo-detector connected to the platform, and a second reflective mirror distally connected to the platform for reflecting the light beam impinging upon it to the photo-detector. In one embodiment the light source is disposed below the disk while in another embodiment the light source is disposed above the disk. The optical system may also be used as a magneto-optic system capable of recording data onto the disk by the addition of a magnet secured to at least one of the reflective mirrors. The magnet is cylindrically shaped and hollow along its axial length, and allows the laser beam reflected by the mirror to pass though and along its axial length. In yet another embodiment the laser source includes a reading laser source with a weaker light intensity for reading the recorded data onto the storage medium, and a recording laser source with a higher light intensity for recording data onto the storage medium.

    • An optical data storage medium transmissive to a laser beam and formed of a light transmissive substrate that provides mechanical support, and a light transmissive data substrate formed on the substrate. The data substrate is patterned to form block regions that block the laser beam from passing through, and pass regions that allow the laser beam to pass through, such that the blockage or passage of light through the optical storage medium reflects the type of data bits to be stored on the optical medium. In another embodiment a magneto-optical data storage medium which is also transmissive (or partly transmissive) to a laser beam includes a data magneto-optical data substrate formed on a substrate. The data substrate is recordable by patterning a magnetic domain with magnetic fields of opposite directions, such that each magnetic direction reflects the type of data bits to be stored on the optical medium. In yet another embodiment the data substrate includes a combination of block and pass regions as well as one or more writeable and/or recordable films.

    • In optically coupling a plurality of light sources to an optical system for focusing light beams from the light sources into spots on a record plane, a center axis of a light beam from a first one of the light sources is aligned to an optical axis of the focusing optical system, and the spots other than a first spot formed by the light beam from the first light source are rotated around the first spot on the record plane to position the spots to the respective target tracks, and a tracking error signal for at least one of the first spot and another spot is detected and the positions of the plurality of spots are integrally controlled based on the detected tracking error signal so that the plurality of spots can follow the respective target tracks. The target tracks to which the spots are to be positioned may be either one track or different tracks. The positioning of the spots to the target tracks may be done either manually or automatically. In the automatic method, a tracking error signal is detected for the first spot, and a deflection mechanism for radially swinging beams from the laser light sources is controlled to control the positions of the spots on the record plane and to cause the first spot to follow the target track.
