    • An apparatus and method for optimizing detection thresholds used to identify addresses of tracks in a disc drive having a head and a disc upon which a plurality of tracks are defined, the tracks including track address fields in which track address information is stored. A comparator is provided which generates track address sequence signals in response to a corresponding plurality of readback signals obtained as the head is maintained in a fixed relationship to a selected track. A demodulator identifies erroneous track address sequence signals therefrom and increments a count in an accumulator for each detected, erroneous signal. A detection threshold circuit sequentially provides the comparator with a set of detection thresholds from a population of detection thresholds, each of which are used in turn by the comparator. An optimal set of thresholds is thereby selected for use by the disc drive in accordance with the relative number of erroneous track address sequence signals accumulated for each of the detection thresholds from the population.

    • The present invention is a method and apparatus for generating a skew or position offset signal for aligning the read element of an MR head with the centerline of written data, during a read operation. The disk has a plurality of tracks, one of which contains a calibration burst that allow the read element to be centered with the centerline of written data. This is accomplished by first writing the calibration burst on a predetermined number of sectors of the track. A profile of the calibration burst is obtained by micro-jogging the head from a first position that is -50% from the track centerline to a second position that is +50% of the track centerline, and sensing the magnitude of the calibration burst in various increments between the first and the second positions. For each microjogging position, the magnitude of the calibration burst is obtained. The microjogging position corresponding to the peak value of the calibration burst represents the offset between the read and the write elements. The offset signal is stored in memory and used in a servo routine to center the MR head during a read operation. The calibration burst may be included in a single track, a predetermined number of tracks, or on every track of the disk.

    • An index determining unit determines that a current position in a disk medium corresponds to a true index when reaching a true index pattern of servo information recorded in the disk medium. The determination is used for reading predetermined servo information so as to perform a servo control operation of a disk reading/writing head. The disk medium has the true index pattern in a first portion of the disk medium and also untrue index patterns of servo information in a predetermined number of second portions in proximity to the first portion along a track direction. The true index pattern and the untrue index patterns form a predetermined sequence. The index determining unit comprises a reading unit for reading the servo information recorded in the disk medium; a storing unit for storing the read servo information in series; and a determining unit for determining that a current position in the disk medium corresponds to the true index when the stored servo information includes a sequence which is different from the predetermined sequence by a predetermined error.

    • A method for following a selected data track on a selected data surface of a disc drive of the type having a dedicated servo system in which guiding of data heads to follow data tracks on data surfaces is effected by positioning an actuator upon which the data heads are mounted in relation to the location of a servo head, also mounted on the actuator, with respect to servo tracks on a dedicated servo surface. The data tracks are organized into cylinders, each containing a servo track, and a selected data track is accessed by seeking to an optimum servo track displaced from the servo track in the cylinder containing the data track by an integral number of track spacings selected to compensate for misalignments greater than a track spacing between the data and servo heads. Data track following is then effected by offsetting the servo head from the optimum servo track to compensate for misalignments of less than a track spacing between the data and servo heads and tracks.
