    • A direct X-ray system for industrial radiography like non-destructive testing applications, and personal monitoring, being particularly less sensitive to pressure phenomena, has been disclosed, said system consisting of a direct X-ray black-and-white negative-working radiographic film material, comprised of a transparent support coated on at least one side thereof with a tabular grain emulsion layer, substantially free from spectrally sensitizing dyes, in which at least 50 percent of total grain projected area of all grains is accounted for by silver bromoiodide tabular grains having an iodide content of less than 5 mole %, based on silver, having an average aspect ratio of at least 2, and having a volume greater than 0.03 &mgr;m3, further characterized in that said tabular grain emulsion layer(s) comprise(s), in an amount of from 5 mg up to 100 mg per mole of coated silver bromoiodide at least one desensitizing agent having a hetero-aromatic part and an electron-withdrawing group and (2) disposed on opposite sides of the radiographic element, two intensifying screen sheets selected from the group consisting of lead, lead oxide, copper and steel, said screen sheets having been designed in order to emit electrons when exposed to X- or &ggr;-rays with an energy greater than or equal to 10 kVp.

    • Black-and-white elements, such as radiographic films, can be processed in roomlight because they include certain light absorbing dyes and desensitizers. Processing of such elements can be achieved using a processing kit and a two-stage process carried out in the same light- and fluid-tight processing apparatus. In the first stage, development is initiated with a developing composition having a pH of from about 10 to about 12.5, and comprising an appropriate black-and-white developing agent and a sulfite. After an appropriate time, a non-sulfite fixing agent is introduced into the processing apparatus or container to provide a combined developing/fixing composition, and development and fixing are carried out simultaneously. The processing method is carried out quickly, usually within about 90 seconds. The presence of sulfite and high pH in both stages decolorizes or deactivates the particulate dyes. The processing kit includes the photographic element, a vessel containing a developing composition, a vessel containing fixing composition, and a light-tight, hand-held container for holding an exposed element as it is inserted into the first and second vessels to carry out processing.

    • A silver halide photographic material for industrial radiography is disclosed comprising a film support and on one or both sides thereof at least one gelatino silver halide emulsion layer wherein each silver halide emulsion layer comprises as silver halide crystals silver chloride and/or silver chlorobromide crystals the amount of bromide therein being at most 25 mole %; has a gelatin to silver halide (expressed as silver nitrate) ratio from 2:10 to 6:10 and has an amount of silver halide corresponding to from 5 g to 15 g of silver per m.sup.2 and wherein said photographic material has been fore-hardened to such an extent that when it is immersed in demineralized water of 25.degree. C. for 3 minutes there is absorbed less than 2.5 g of water per gram of gelatin, characterized in that said silver chloride or silver chlorobromide emulsion crystals are chemically ripened in the presence of at least one sulphur compound and at least one gold compound, wherein gold is present in an amount from 0.01 to 1 .mu.mole per mole of silver halide, the molar ratio of sulphur to gold being less than 1.0.
