    • A frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar is described. The radar includes a first discriminator for receiving a portion of the swept frequency signal generated by a frequency sweep generator and for producing a reference difference-frequency signal of frequency equal to the difference between the frequency of the swept frequency signal and the frequency of a time displaced swept frequency signal derived from the swept frequency signal. An analogue-to-digital converter is provided for sampling the target difference-frequency signal at a rate derived from the frequency of the reference difference-frequency signal. A processor (88) for determining frequency components of the digitized target difference-frequency signal is arranged to determine for at least one frequency component of the digitized target difference-frequency signal any phase difference between frequency sweeps of said swept frequency signal. The radar may be used for detecting foreign object debris (FOD) on runway surfaces and the like. A corresponding method of operating an FMCW radar is also described.

    • A ground-penetrating radar comprises a software-definable transmitter for launching pairs of widely separated and coherent continuous waves.     • A test device for a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar is provided. The test device has a central control unit for monitoring the FMCW radar. When the FMCW radar transmits a frequency modulated continuous signal to search for a target, the central control unit of the test device in present invention will simulate the motion of the target according to a plurality of setting parameters and generate an echo signal to the FMCW radar. The present invention also includes a first digital signal synthesizer and a transmitting unit. The first digital signal synthesizer is coupled to the central control unit for generating and transmitting an intermediate-frequency signal to the transmitting unit according to the settings in the central control unit and a reference clock. The transmitting unit generates the echo signal according to the intermediate-frequency signal.

    • The system and method for radar calibration using antenna leakage is a simplified means of calibrating the channels in amplitude and phase using natural signal leakage between antennas. It utilizes as calibration signal a wideband sinusoidal Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) waveform with a modulation index and modulation frequency chosen to generate spectral components (or discrete signal frequencies) that fall within the receiver Doppler passband of the radar. The calibration signal is radiated out of the transmitting antenna and enters the radar receiver front-end through the transmit-to-receive antenna leakage which occurs naturally. This technique provides a low-complexity (simpler hardware realization) means for achieving a wideband calibration rapidly and is a practical alternative to the conventional calibration approach that relies on generating offset Doppler signals that are coupled into the radar receiver front-end through the use of couplers and cabling within the radar.

    • The present invention provides a radar device mounted on a moving object that moves along a continuous plane, having (1) a transceiver part for transmitting a signal having a main lobe in the direction of the movement of the moving object and a side lobe directed towards the continuous plane, that receives a first reflection signal from a target in the direction of the main lobe and a second reflection signal from the continuous plane in the direction of the side lobe, and (2) control processing means for detecting the frequency of a beat signal of the second reflection signal received by the transceiver part and the signal emitted by the transceiver part and for detecting information correlated to the attitude of the radar device with respect to the continuous plane based on that frequency. This enables detection of changes of mounting attitude for the moving object without requiring additional hardware.
