    • A digital sun sensor having an ND filter, a prism, an opaque layer formed on the prism and having a slit, a band-pass filter, and a linear array sensor. A sunbeam passes through ND filter, and is diffracted as it passes through the slit, and is refracted by prism. The diffracted sunbeam, which has a specified wavelength, passes through the band-pass filter and reaches the linear array sensor. The sensor is driven by a first clock signal, thereby generating electrical signals. An automatic gain control circuit maintains these signals at a constant peak value. The output signal of automatic gain control circuit is compared with a reference level. When this output is at a level lower than the reference level, the first clock signal is supplied to an N-bit counter. When the output is at a level higher than the reference level, a second clock signal having a frequency half that of the first clock signal is supplied to the N-bit counter. N-bit counter counts the pulses of either clock signal. Any pulse of the second clock signal, that has been counted by the counter, is input to the lowest bit-input terminal of an (N+1)-bit latch circuit, and the pulses of the first clock signal, which have been counted by the counter, are input to the other N-bit input terminals of the latch circuit.

    • A device for the recognition and directional detection of optical radiation, especially laser radiation, i.e., a so-called laser warning sensor. The laser warning sensor comprises several optical input systems to which a light guide path leading to a detector is assigned. In the individual light guide paths, polarizing devices for the linear polarization of the incident optical radiation are provided which determine for each light guide path at its end facing the detector, a specific direction of polarization which is different from the direction of polarization of the other light guide paths. The radiation leaving the ends of the light guide paths combined in a bundle is conducted to a detector designed as a polarimeter. From the direction of polarization determined in the polarimeter, the direction of the incident laser radiation is determined in an evaluation circuit.

    • A video signal processor, particularly for use in identifying light source position, in which a video signal stream from an image detector is processed directly on a substrate using charge coupled device stored image transfer technology. The video signal is clocked through an array of charge coupled devices in a plurality of closely adjacent channels on a single semiconductor chip in such manner that the pattern of signals stored on the chip in the region of the adjacent channels corresponds to the light source image on the detector. Video signal processing is shared between the chip and external electronics to provide an indication of signal strength (acquisition), signal background, and signal centroiding in both horizontal and vertical axes. Much of the signal processing is provided directly on the chip by segmenting and intercoupling the charge coupled device electrodes in a predetermined pattern. There results a reduction in the amount of interconnection, external electronics and the spatial distribution of the video signal that improves the system immunity to environmental noise and limits weight aloft.

    • A plurality of directional solar energy sensors are each positioned skyward at a different orientation defined by a unique combination of elevation and azimuth so only one sensor at a time receives appreciable solar energy. A solar energy collector is supported so it is movable in elevation and azimuth. Responsive to the sensors, the collector is moved to the unique combination of elevation and azimuth of the one sensor receiving solar energy. In one embodiment, the collector is positioned by a pair of fluid driven pistons in a cylinder corresponding to each sensor; the sun's heat received by the sensor expands the fluid and drives the pistons to position the collector accordingly.
