摘要： A bone marrow access device includes a cannula and a sharp stylet removably positioned in the cannula. The cannula defines a distal opening at a distal tip and a side aperture in a side of the cannula, proximally from the distal opening. The stylet has a sharp distal tip and extends beyond the distal opening. A plug is receivable in the cannula distal to the side aperture to seal the distal opening when the stylet is removed. A method of accessing bone includes inserting the cannula and sharp stylet positioned in the cannula into bone; removing the sharp stylet from the cannula; pushing a plug through the cannula and distal to the side aperture to seal the distal opening of the cannula; and accessing the bone through the side aperture. Accessing the bone can include aspirating bone marrow, injecting a substance, or inserting an instrument into the bone.

摘要： Neurosurgical apparatus has a guidance device having a guide tube and a neurosurgical instrument for insertion into the guide tube. The inner surface of the guide tube is arranged, for example profiled, to at least partially engage the outer surface of the neurosurgical instrument when inserted therein. The guide tube thus guides the neurosurgical instrument along a predefined path through the guide tube. At least one of the guidance device and the outer surface of the neurosurgical instrument are configured to provide a fluid return path for carrying any fluid displaced from within the guide tube during insertion of the neurosurgical instrument into the guide tube. A seal may also be provided for sealing the fluid return path.

摘要： The Brain Portal is a device that allows for easy access to the brain for treatments that require multiple visits inside the brain case to alleviate the need for multiple craniotomies. Such treatments could involve multiple injections of medicines that have to be given over a period of days or weeks. In a different configuration, it also allows for electrical stimulation of the brain thru electrodes without the need for batteries, and allows the flow of electricity from outside the brain to the affected areas using induction coils. The Brain Portal can also be used as an easy means to collect samples of cerebral spinal fluid without the need of a spinal tap. Furthermore, having an easy access allows the physician the option of injecting drugs directly into the brain, bypassing the blood-brain barrier, thereby lowering the dosage needed to treat disease.

摘要： An apparatus and method for introducing portals into bone is described herein. An example apparatus for introducing portals into bone includes a handle, a base, and a driving member. The driving member can be made to project past the base by operating the handle. The base is detachable from the handle. The apparatus also includes a guide coupled at a first end to the handle and at a second end to the base. The base is detachably coupled to the guide. A base coupling detachably coupling the base to the guide includes an actuating member movable between a coupled configuration wherein the base is coupled to the guide and an uncoupled configuration wherein the base is released from the guide. The actuating member is arranged so that motion of the handle toward the base moves the actuating member from the coupled configuration to the uncoupled configuration.

摘要： An implantable drug delivery system includes a middle ear section with a proximal end fixed to a tympanic membrane of a patient, and a distal end that penetrates through a fluid-tight sealed opening into the inner ear. An inner ear section has a proximal end that is connected to the distal end of the middle ear guide member at the sealed opening, and a closed distal end terminating the inner ear holding member some predetermined distance within the cochlea. A hollow interior of the inner ear section is configured for containing a replaceable pharmaceutical agent, and an outer surface is configured to release the pharmaceutical agent from the hollow interior into the inner ear of the patient. The middle ear section and the inner ear section are configured to cooperate for replacing the pharmaceutical agent through the proximal end of the middle ear section to the inner ear section.

摘要： A transcutaneous access port to a user has a coupling member destined to be anchored in a bone of the user. A first valve system is removably connectable to the coupling member and a second valve system is removably connected to the first valve system. An internal conduit is connected at its proximal end to the access port and at its distal end to a vascular structure of the user. An external conduit is connected to the access port and to an extracorporeal device. A traversing cavity is formed in the bone at an implantation site of the user, passing the internal conduit. The internal conduit is routed through the traversing cavity to connect its distal end to the vascular structure of the user. The coupling member is anchored to the bone at the implantation site. The proximal end of the internal conduit is connected to the access port.

摘要： Apparatus for delivering therapeutic agents to the central nervous system of a subject is described. The apparatus includes at least one intracranial catheter and a percutaneous access device. The percutaneous access device includes a body having at least one extracorporeal surface and at least one subcutaneous surface, the body defining at least one port for connection to an implanted intracranial catheter. The port is accessible from the extracorporeal surface of the device, but is provided with a seal such as a rubber bung between the lumen of the port and the extracorporeal surface. The percutaneous access device may have more than two ports and/or a flange. A method of implanting the percutaneous access device is also described.
