    • An improvement to a nursing system for baby animals including a soft cylinder or rope-like extension detachably affixed to fabric sleeve or toroidal donut shaped ring surrounding a nipple-topped nursing bottle. The soft-cylinder or rope-like extension may be formed into a platform for the nipple-topped nursing bottle to enable baby animals to obtain liquid from the nipple-topped nursing bottle without assistance. Alternatively, the soft cylinder or rope-like extension provides a resting place for the baby animals or a series of surfaces on which the baby animal may climb to position itself where it can obtain liquid from the nipple-topped nursing bottle.

    • The invention relates to a device for feeding a liquid to an animal. The device includes a nipple member (6), a reservoir (14) for the liquid (13), a passage (15) having an extension between the reservoir (14) and the nipple member (6), a feeding member (16, 19) arranged to allow a supply of liquid through the passage (15) to the nipple member (6), and a control member (7, 11, 18) arranged to control the activation of the feeding member (16, 19). The control member is arranged to detect the presence of a part of the animal in a predetermined position and to initiate activation of the feeding member (16, 19) when the part of the animal is detected in the predetermined position.

    • A teat or nipple for the feeding of young animals. The teat is formed by a hollow body (10) made of a resilient material. The body has an inlet end (11) and an outlet end (12). The outlet end includes one or more slits (20) through the wall (19) of the body. The slit or slits (20) do not extend into that area (18) of the wall (19) of the body which forms the extremity (18) of the outlet end (12). A valve 26, 27) is located in the inlet end (11), said vale having a bore (30) with a pair of flaps (36) at the inner end of the bore, these flaps defining an outlet slot (38) through which liquid passing through one end of the bore can pass into the interior of the hollow body. The valve in its relaxed state is open to permit such flow to occur but the flaps are such as to close the outlet slot (38) upon any reverse flow of liquid from the interior of the hollow body occurring.

    • A teat for feeding liquids to animals adapted to be fastened to a source of liquid such as a pipe or drum in use to project outwardly from the source. The teat has a resilient outer end which is closed apart from a slit in it which slit is itself normally adapted to be closed by the resilience to provide a sufficient liquid seal. The closed outer end is preferably concave, coned, cusped or otherwise re-entrant. A reinforcing member such as webs are located, preferably internally on either side of the slit so that if the end of the teat is squashed or compressed by sucking forces exerted by the animal, with components along the direction of slit, the reinforcing member causes the slit to be pulled open, thereby allowing liquid to flow out of it in use. The pulling action allows an acceptable flow rate from a comparatively small slit which is less prone to leak than a large slit.

    • Ruminants with a fully developed rumen function are fed by a method in which the total feed is divided into two parts comprising(a) a liquid feed containing high-energy components, which feed is supplied while stimulating the ruminant to close its oesophageal groove, and(b) a solid feed containing low-energy components, which feed is supplied in such a way that the ruminant does not close its oesophageal groove,both types of feed being independently available through separate dispensing systems. One or more of the components of the liquid feed may be partially or completely hydrolyzed.A liquid feed dispensing device (an embodiment of which is shown in FIG. 1) comprises a container, metering means and outlet means for liquid feed; the outlet means (such as a teat) are located in an enclosure for ruminants at a level substantially above the level of the shoulders of the ruminants housed in the enclosure.
