    • There is provided a method for diagnosing an abnormal state of a sensor having a nonlinear output characteristic in which an output signal of a sensor changes nonlinearly. The method includes the steps of determining a first detection value which is indicated by the output signal of the sensor at a predetermined time, and determining a second detection value which is indicated by the output signal of the sensor obtained when a detection value indicated by the output signal has changed by a predetermined variation from the first detection value. The method also includes judging whether or not a deviation between the first detection value and the second detection value is out of a predetermined range, and determining that the sensor has an abnormal state when it is determined that the deviation is out of the predetermined range.

    • An image communicating system such as a facsimile for transmitting and/or receiving image data. This system comprises a reader to read an original image at the first resolution, a coder to code the image signal of the first resolution obtained by the reader, an image memory to store the signal coded by the coder, a converter to convert the signal read out from the image memory to a signal of a recording resolution on the reception side, and a transmitter to transmit an output signal of the converter. The image memory is commonly used as a reception memory, a broadcasting transmission memory, and a retention memory for multicopy, so that the memory capacity can be reduced. The pixel density of the transmitting image data is converted in accordance with the recording pixel density on the reception side. Thus, the image data of a high quality can be derived and printed by a high-speed laser printer on the reception side without changing the image size.

    • In order to prevent sudden fluctuations in the supply of hydraulic fluid fed to a power steering or like servo mechanism and to enable the downshifting of a transmission used to drive the pump and an ancillary device such as an alternator, at speeds suited to the specifications of the alternator, a "flow-down" valve induces first and second flow reductions which are separated by an engine speed range which enables the higher downshift speed to be selected at an engine speed suited to the specifications of the alternator. The first flow reduction or flow-down occurs within a relatively narrow engine speed range. This facilitates the above mentioned selection and additionally enables a change from a high power steering assist at low speed to an intermediate one. The second "flow-down" enables a more gradual change from the intermediate assist to a low level one suitable for high speed driving. In the embodiment of the invention, the engine speeds at which the transmission is downshifted are selected to correspond to the pump speed just before and just after the first flow reduction occurs in the upshift and downshift conditions of the transmission, respectively. Shifting of the transmission due to sharp changes in load is inhibited when the engine is operating between the first and second speeds.

    • The wipers of a windshield wiper are oscillated by a drive shaft driven by a wiper motor. A disc-type contact base member is securely mounted on the drive shaft to carry thereon two electrically conductive plates each of which is contactable with a pair of stationary contacts. When an electrical connection is established between the pair of stationary contacts, a washer pump supplied with electric current is driven to eject a washer liquid through nozzles onto the surface of a windshield. The conductive plates are so located that the electrical connection between the pair of stationary contacts is established only during time periods in which the wiper blades move in both "go" and "return" directions from their starting positions to positions which are immediately in front of the positions at which the wiper blades would be struck by the washer liquid being ejected from the nozzles.

    • A vehicle window glass washing system is disclosed which comprises swingable wiper means provided in sliding contact with the window glass of a vehicle and injector means for injecting liquid detergent onto a position of the window glass when actuated. The system also comprises a rotary disc rotatable in synchronism with swinging movement of the wiper means. A pair of contact plates are disposed on the rotary disc symmetrically with respect to the center of the rotary disc and electrically connected to each other. A pair of contacts are fixed to the rotary disc symmetrically with respect to the center of the rotary disc so that the rotary disc can bring one of the contact plates into contact with one of the fixed contacts while at the same time the other contact plate into contact with the other fixed contact to allow actuation of the injector means except when the wiper means is around the position at which the liquid detergent is injected.
