    • A mass spectrometer is disclosed wherein ions from a pulsed ion source are dispersed in a drift region so that the ions become separated according to their mass to charge ratios. The ions are then received by an ion guide in which multiple trapping regions are created and wherein the multiple trapping regions are translated along the length of the ion guide. The ion guide receives the ions so that all the ions trapped in a particular trapping region have substantially the same or similar mass to charge ratios. The ions are released from the exit of the ion guide and the pusher/puller electrode of an orthogonal acceleration Time of Flight mass analyzer is arranged to be energised in synchronization with the ions emerging from the ion guide. The trapping regions may be translated along the ion guide with a velocity which becomes progressively slower and the delay time of the pusher/puller electrode may be progressively increased.

    • An ion guide or ion trap is disclosed comprising a segmented linear ion guide or ion trap. Ions are confined radially within the ion guide or ion trap by the application of an AC or RF voltage to the electrodes. A static potential well is maintained along at least a portion of the axial length of the ion guide or ion trap. A time varying homogeneous electric field is applied along at least a portion of the axial length of the ion guide or ion trap. The combination of the static axial potential well and the time varying axial homogeneous electric field causes ions to be ejected from the ion guide or ion trap in a substantially non-resonant manner.

    • A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising a quadrupole rod set ion guide or mass filter device (6). A broadband frequency signal (10) having one or more notches (11a, 11b, 11c) is applied to the rods of the quadrupole rod set (6). The notched broadband frequency signal (10) causes undesired ions to be resonantly ejected from the ion guide (6). The notched broadband frequency signal (10) has frequency components missing which correspond with the resonance frequency of ions which are desired to be onwardly transmitted. The ion guide or mass filter device (6) enables a plurality of desired ions having different mass to charge ratios to be simultaneously transmitted by the ion guide or mass filter device (6) whilst other ions are resonantly ejected from the ion guide or mass filter device (6).
