    • Implanted catheters are locked with a solution comprising a lower alcohol, typically ethanol, propanol, or butanol, in a range from 1% to 99% by volume, and an additive in a range from 1% to 99% by volume, the additive comprising an anti-microbial, typically taurolidine or triclosan, or an anti-coagulant, typically riboflavin, sodium citrate, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, or citric acid. The use of an alcohol and additive solution can effectively reduce fouling of the catheter, particularly clotting and thrombus in intravascular catheters, as well as eradicate existing infections and/or reduce the risk of potential infections. Existing infections and/or potential infections can be further reduced by employing a catheter body which permits an anti-microbial solution to penetrate into the catheter body and preferably through the catheter into tissue surrounding the implanted catheter.

    • A weighing scale includes a hollow casing having a lower base and an upper covering for support an object. A pressure gauge mounted to the base includes an indicator, and a hydraulic pressure sensor connected to the indicator and actuating it in response to a sensed pressure produced by the weight of the object. Four spaced fulcrum posts are mounted to the base. A lever mechanism includes a rear one-piece rod and a pair of spaced front rods respectively and pivotably mounted to the four fulcrum posts. The rear one-piece rod includes a force exerting plate resting on the hydraulic pressure sensor. A transmitting frame provided between the covering and the lever mechanism includes a pair of spaced rods and a connecting rod mounted between the spaced rods which are pivotably mounted to the lever mechanism.

    • A return apparatus includes a first hollow cylindrical member and a second hollow cylindrical member sleeved in the first cylindrical member to create a telescoping movement in a sealed relationship. The first cylindrical member has a first and a second closed end to define a first sealed chamber. The second cylindrical member has a first closed end protruding beyond the first closed end of the first cylindrical member and a second closed end having a flange radially extended therefrom to seal and engage movably with the inner face of the first cylindrical member in the first chamber. A floating piston is mounted in the axial bore of the second cylindrical member defining a second chamber and a third chamber. The third chamber is provided with a compressible gas. The first and second chambers are filled with fluid under the pressure of the compressible gas. In this way, the second cylindrical member can be retracted to an original position after it is pulled outward by an axially external force.

    • The present invention provides impulse-response-based algorithms for high-speed characterization of electrochemical systems (e.g., batteries) with good accuracy. In some variations, a method for dynamic characterization of an electrochemical system comprises selecting an electrochemical system to be characterized; sensing the measured current to or from said electrochemical system; sensing the measured voltage across said electrochemical system; sensing or calculating the time derivatives of the measured current and voltage; and calculating an impulse response using a recursive or matrix-based algorithm (as disclosed herein), wherein said impulse response characterizes said electrochemical system within a selected sampling window. The algorithms are robust, incorporating noise-reduction techniques, and are suitable for real applications under various operating conditions. These algorithms, and the apparatus and systems to implement them, are able to accept various exciting signals to provide dynamic characterization of various states of the electrochemical system.

    • A drilling system for drilling vertical holes in a mine roof includes a chuck configured to be driven in rotation by a motorized drill head.
