    • A fluid filter assembly is comprised of a flexible, compressible housing, a filter pouch in the housing formed from membrane filter media and having a fluid opening in one end thereof, a fluid inlet extending into the housing in fluid communication with the interior of the filter pouch through the fluid opening, and a fluid outlet extending from the housing in fluid communication with the interior of the housing external of the filter pouch. Fluid may pass through the fluid inlet into the interior of the filter pouch, then pass through the membrane filter media of the filter pouch into the interior of the housing external of the filter pouch and finally exit from the housing through the fluid outlet. The unique filter pouch may be made by providing a filter sheet of membrane filter media and folding the sheet substantially in half to form a filter pouch configuration having a folded edge, two edges adjacent the folded edge and an edge opposite the folded edge. The filter pouch may be incorporated into a filter assembly by enclosing the filter pouch in a flexible, compressible housing, sealing the adjacent edges of the filter pouch, providing a fluid inlet in the housing in fluid communication with the interior of the filter pouch and providing a fluid outlet in the housing in fluid communication with the interior of the housing external of the filter pouch.

    • An apparatus for the separation and collection of plasma or serum from the cellular phase of a blood sample in a blood collection tube having a piston assembly provided with a cup shaped housing with a closed rear portion having a one-way valve extending therethrough with a filter disposed in the housing and formed with an open forward portion surrounded by a flexible peripheral flange of greater diameter than the internal diameter of the collection tube. The invention also contemplates the provision of a piston assembly for use in apparatus for the separation and collection of plasma or serum in which the piston has a body member with a portion which permits the passage of the liquid phase and also has a peripheral projecting flexible flange of greater diameter than the internal diameter of the collection tube and having a smooth lower surface and a radially grooved upper surface so that when the piston assembly is shifted into the collection tube the lower surface of the flange has sealing wiping engagement with the inner wall of the container and the liquid phase will be forced through the central body portion of the piston assembly to be isolated on the other side thereof and so that when the piston is shifted outwardly the seal will be broken and the upper grooved surface of the flange engages the inner wall of the collection tube so that air can bypass through the grooves to the inner portion of the collection tube.

    • A device for filtering a parenteral solution immediately before it is infused into a patient's vein. The device has a hollow housing containing a "depth" filter membrane of nonfibrous hydrophobic material having randomly connected stacked passages of from 10 to 40 micron size through the filter. After the filter membrane has had one surface in contact with the parenteral solution for a period of 15 to 60 seconds while passing only a minute amount of liquid it is then manually tapped to send a shock wave through the filter. This shock wave unexpectedly causes the hydrophobic filter to freely pass liquid and filter out more than 90 percent of all particulate matter of 5 micron size and larger from the parenteral solution. The large pore hydrophobic filter membrane can perform these filtering efficiencies with a very small, thin disc-shaped membrane of approximately 1/4 inch effective diameter.

    • A device for controlling or metering a relatively small flow of liquid which may be a gravity flow such as in intravenous introduction of liquids into human veins. The controller, referred to as a flow rater in one form is a cylindrical ceramic filter element of a predetermined length capable of maintaining a uniform, metered flow without monitoring. Adjustable forms of the flow rater are provided in which two resistance materials are provided in series, one of which is adjustable by compressing it to provide rates between zero and a very small flow. In another form, the effective length of the cylindrical ceramic filter element is adjustable.
