    • A differential linear actuator is disclosed which minimizes the torque that must be reacted by an input, rotary drive sleeve member. The differential linear actuator includes an actuator housing within which the drive sleeve is rotatably mounted. An intermediate actuating member is concentrically mounted between the actuator housing and the drive sleeve and is connected to the drive sleeve through a spline connection such that rotation of the drive sleeve results in rotation of the intermediate actuator member. In addition, due to the spline connection and a rotary to linear connection assembly between the intermediate actuator member and the actuator housing, rotation of the intermediate actuator member results in axial displacement of the member relative to the actuator housing. An elongated output member is further connected to a remote end of the intermediate actuator member through a second rotary to linear connection assembly such that rotation of the intermediate actuator member also causes the output member to be axially shifted. The two rotary to linear connection assemblies are designed such that rotation of the drive sleeve in a given direction causes the intermediate actuator member and the output member to axially shift in opposite directions with the output member being axially displaced relative to the actuator housing a distance greater than the intermediate actuator member. In addition, a linear variable displacement transducer is adapted to be connected between the actuator housing and the output member to sense the position of the output member which can then be used to control the drive to the drive sleeve.

    • The jack comprises a tubular primary screw (10) provided with an outer screw thread and an inner screw thread having opposite thread hands, a secondary screw (11) cooperative with the inner screw thread and having an end (11a) articulated to a fixed point, a nut (9) fixed in rotation and connected to move in translation with the element to be adjusted and cooperative with the outer screw thread, a speed reducer associated with a motor (M) for driving the primary screw (10) in rotation, and means for preventing a rotation of the speed reducer (13) relative to the nut (9). These means comprise an articulated compass structure (18) having two branches (18a, 18b) articulated together. One of the branches is also articulated to the speed reducer (13) while the other branch is articulated to a part (9) of the jack which is fixed in rotation. The compass structure (18) considerably reduces the friction and improves the efficiency of the jack.

    • Ballscrew actuators are well known for use as a primary flight control actuator for operating a flight control surface. The operation of the ballscrew actuator is critical to the success of an aircraft mission; however, when the actuator is subject to ballistic fire a projectile hit which is not totally destructive can still render the actuator inoperable. Increasing the potential for operability of the ballscrew actuator after a projectile hit which is not totally destructive will increase the number of successful returns from aircraft missions.The ballistic tolerant dual load path ballscrew actuator has a selectively driven ballnut and a ballscrew drivingly connected to the ballnut. The ballscrew has an outer tubular member with an external helical ball groove providing a primary load path. An inner tubular member fits closely within and is fixed to the outer tubular member to provide a secondary load path upon cracking of the outer tubular member by a projectile passing through the outer tubular member. The inner tubular member is formed of ballistic tolerant composite material to maintain its structural integrity when contacted by a projectile which has passed through and caused cracking of the outer tubular member.

    • Dual, series ball screw and ball nut array for reciprocating a cable and a cutting mechanism utilizing the array. The first ball screw is stationary while the second is moveable, spaced apart and axially aligned with the first ball screw. Ball nuts are rotatably carried on each ball screw and the ball nuts are connected as by a tube. A drive means such as an hydraulic piston activator reciprocates the movable ball screw, thereby translating and rotating the second ball nut likewise the ball nut carried on the stationary ball screw. A pulley on either ball nut or on the connecting tube activates a cable connected thereto. A cutter connected to the cable is thereby reciprocated for slicing action.
