    • A discrimination mark having both a simple authentication function by perceptual recognition and an accurate authentication function by mechanical recognition enabled by using a combination of a mark having an authentication function by perceptual recognition with a substance having a content of a table isotope different from the natural abundance. The S/N ratio can be made large in making a mechanical recognition, so that the authentication by mechanical recognition can be implemented with high accuracy. The substance having a controlled content of a stable isotope different from the natural abundance is a rate one itself and difficult to produce. As a result, this discrimination mark has a high security level.

    • An integrated circuit card is accessed by a card reader that is capable of establishing a communications link with a host computer. The integrated circuit card includes a card body, a memory device mounted on the card body, a fingerprint sensor mounted on the card body, a card reader interface circuit mounted on the card body, and a processing unit mounted on the card body and connected to the memory device, the fingerprint sensor and the card reader interface circuit. The memory device stores fingerprint reference data obtained by scanning a fingerprint of an assigned user, and card information therein. The fingerprint sensor scans a fingerprint of a holder of the card body, and generates fingerprint scan data. The card reader interface circuit is activable so as to communicate with the card reader. The processing unit receives the fingerprint scan data from the fingerprint sensor, and compares the fingerprint scan data with the fingerprint reference data in the memory device to verify if the holder of the card body is the assigned user. The processing unit activates the card reader interface circuit for exchanging the card information with the host computer via the card reader upon verifying that the holder of the card body is the assigned user.

    • A machine readable assaying system including a test card providing a machine readable assaying arrangement. At least one analysis strip is provided, possibly including antibodies and or reagents capable of detecting and optically indicating the presence or absence of at least one substance present within a volume of physiological fluid. The analysis strips composing, at least in part, an assaying mechanism in the form a pattern of elements, generally additionally including at least one fixed strip, and at least one blank region. Each analysis strip, upon contacting the physiological fluid of a donor for a suitable temporal interval, may effect a change from a first state having a first reflectance level to a second state having a second substantially different reflectance level, thereby altering the pattern formed by the assaying mechanism. The particular pattern that results from an exposure to the volume of the physiological fluid is contemplated to produce a distinct machine readable indicia. The assaying system may also include a scanner and decoder to optically scan and read the machine readable indicia and transmit read information over a communication link to a remote location for processing. In a most preferred embodiment of the system, the transformation of the pattern, which occurs on the test card, will not be readable or interpretable by the administrator of the test/assay, thus preserving the anonymity and privacy of the tested individual.
