    • A fountain applicator for applying coating liquid onto a web of paper carried past the applicator, has a coating liquid flow path that includes a curved surface along which a sheet of the coating liquid is flowed to subject the sheet to centrifugal force to cause air entrained in the coating liquid to move away from one side of the sheet that is toward the curved surface, so that the one side is relatively free of entrained air. After being flowed along the curved surface, the sheet of coating liquid is directed toward the web in a free standing jet curtain of coating liquid, to contact the web surface primarily with the one relatively air-free side of the coating liquid sheet to decrease the occurrence of skip coating on the web surface, especially when the web is traveling past the applicator at high speeds. The coating is applied in excess onto the web surface and is metered and leveled to a desired coat weight by a downstream doctor. The downstream doctor may comprise a single metering device, or it may comprise an intermediate metering device followed by a final metering and leveling device.

    • A short dwell coater apparatus is disclosed for applying coating material onto a web guided by a backing roll. The apparatus includes a coater housing which is disposed in close proximity to the backing roll. The arrangement is such that the web guided by the backing roll moves between the backing roll and the housing. The housing defines an application chamber which is open towards the web and which extends along the web in a cross-machine direction. The application chamber is connected to a source of coating material such that the coating material is applied to the web during movement of the web past the chamber. The coater housing has an upstream lip which is disposed upstream relative to the chamber and adjacent to the web. The lip defines an upstream coating overflow for permitting excess coating material to flow therethrough. A flexible coater metering blade is disposed downstream relative to the chamber. The blade extends from the housing towards the web for metering the coating material applied to the web. A perforate conduit is disposed within the chamber and extends in a cross-machine direction. The conduit permits the flow therethrough of a vortex of entrained air generated within the chamber such that in use of the apparatus, when the vortex of entrained air is generated within the chamber, the air flows through the perforate conduit away from the chamber so that streaking of the coating material due to the intermittent escape of the entrained air past the metering blade is inhibited.

A blade is adjustably secured to the housing and extends from the housing towards the web. The blade defines a downstream extremity of the application zone. A movable flow divider supported by the housing extends into the application zone. The divider has an upstream and a downstream end, with the downstream end being movably disposed in the vicinity of the blade for reducing the size of a flow vortex generated within the application zone due to movement of the web past the open face.

    • A coating apparatus is disclosed for applying a coating onto a surface of a moving web. The apparatus includes a backing member which defines a perforate surface such that when the member is connected to a source of partial vacuum, the web is drawn towards the perforate surface of the member. A coating blade is disposed adjacent to the backing member such that the blade urges the web towards the perforate surface. A permeable belt extends around the backing member with the belt being disposed between the web and the backing member such that when the source of partial vacuum is connected to the backing member, air flows through the belt and the perforate surface for drawing the web into close conformity with the belt. The belt and the web then move together in the same direction for inhibiting the buildup of deleterious material adjacent to the blade that would otherwise remain adjacent to the blade causing marking of the coating applied to the surface of the web by the blade.
