    • Methods and systems for deceiving other characters in a video game are disclosed. A video game may include a simulated environment in which player and computer controlled characters can monitor each other's positions using radar, e.g., an acoustic radar that detects noise (such as the firing of various weapons) associated with other characters. A character may fire a decoy bullet, which creates noise at the location of impact rather than the location of firing. A character may temporarily jam another character's radar so that the other character's radar does not display character locations. A first character may mimic an enemy character so that the first character appears as a friend to enemy characters on each enemy characters' radar. A special weapon may make all visible characters visually appear as enemies to a first character, thereby confusing the first character. Another special weapon may create a duplicate image of a character, thereby confusing others.

    • The present invention discloses an infrared detection type shooting game machine and method, which changes the degree of difficulty and environment of a game depending upon a distance measured using a plurality of references arranged at irregular intervals, thus providing realistic and interesting games. The shooting game method includes (a) displaying images, including a mark, by a display means and displaying a plurality of references that are bases for detection of coordinates; (b) detecting a partial image of a certain region of a point indicated through . an indication means manipulated by a player; (c) receiving the detected partial image, detecting coordinates of the references, and setting coordinates of the references to the detected coordinates of the references; (d) detecting indicated coordinates of the point indicated by the player based upon the coordinates of the references; (e) measuring a distance D between the display means and the indication means based upon previously stored intervals between the plurality stored intervals between the plurality of references and distances between the coordinates of the references; and (f) setting reference distances D0 to some of distances D between the display means and the indication means falling within a certain range, and changing a degree of difficulty and situations of the game depending upon whether the reference distances are fulfilled.

    • The objective is to prevent erroneous operation of an optical sensor while removing restrictions on the degree of freedom of design. In a handgun-shaped controller comprising a lens for focusing light that is incident on a muzzle and an optical sensor 18 for detecting the thus-focused light, a light-proof case 50 is provided to cover the lens and optical sensor in such a manner that external light other that from a muzzle is not incident thereon. The light-proof case covers the entire surface of the optical sensor and the portion of the board on which the optical sensor is mounted. Cut-out portions 54A and 54B for through-holes for signal terminals 19 are provided in a connection portion between parts 50A and 50B that form the light-proof case. A protuberant portion is provided on the connection portion of one part 50A and a fit portion thereof is provided in the connection of another part 50B. A protuberant portion is provided so as to deform when a board 70 is pressed into slits 52A and 52B, sealing the gaps between the slits and the board. The configuration could be such that the entirety of the board is covered by the light-proof case and the optical sensor is attached directly within the light-proof case.
