    • A reusable temperature sensing probe assembly comprises a temperature sensor strip extending from one end of a handle. The temperature sensor strip carries at least one temperature sensor for measuring temperature within a body cavity of a person, such as the rectum. The handle/temperature sensor strip is reversibly positionable within a unitary balloon/sleeve assembly comprised of a balloon portion and a sleeve portion. The balloon portion is comprised of a first interior space configured to hold the temperature sensor stip and a second interior space separate from the first interior space that is configured for inflation. An inflation tube has one portion sealed within the second interior space of the balloon portion and a second portion which extends through the sleeve portion for connection to a fluid source.

    • A spatial profile of structural and elastic parameters along a lumen of a hollow organ is determined based on obtaining the functional dataset of pressure P, balloon volume V, and balloon linear coordinate X while continuously moving the balloon along the lumen. A comprehensive characterization of elastic properties of the tissue and geometrical parameters of the lumen are then determined using a previously obtained calibration curve of balloon pressure vs. balloon volume when the balloon is expanded freely. As opposed to prior art devices for measuring tissues elasticity at one or several distinct locations by having deploying a balloon locally, the present invention describes a device in which the balloon is continuously moved through the lumen of the hollow organ whereby allowing elasticity determination over a significant portion or the entire length of the organ. The relationship between P, V, and X is then described by a family of constant pressure curves F(Pi=const,V,X), in the constant pressure method; or by family of constant volume curves F(P,Vi=const,X), in the constant volume method. The handheld device of the invention supports evaluation using either method. Repeating the test at different levels of balloon pressure or volume allows obtaining of a family of curves characterizing linear distribution of wall compliance along the lumen. Methods and devices of the invention can be used to evaluate cervix, urethra, esophagus, intestines, blood vessels, and other organs.

    • A novel method for soft tissue characterization includes obtaining a sequence of surface stress patterns as a function of an increasing compression force when a probe is pressed against the tissue over the location of the lesion of interest. A number of elasticity features are then calculated to characterize the tissue and the lesion located therein including strain hardening, loading curve average slope, lesion peak signal under a predetermined load, tissue heterogeneity, lesion shape and lesion mobility. At least three elasticity features are provided as an input to a statistical Bayesian classifier trained on a clinical database to calculate the probability of the lesion being benign or malignant. Additional patient-related parameters may be further provided as inputs to the classifier to increase the accuracy of differentiation between benign and malignant lesions. These parameters include a family history of cancer disease, a patient-inherited genetic factor, a history of said tissue related diseases, patient's age, patient's weight, and patient's lifestyle and dietary factors. The method of the invention along with other non-invasive examinations of lesions may help in reducing the rate of biopsies, specifically breast tissue biopsies.

    • The present invention relates to a method for real time mechanical imaging of a prostate with a transrectal probe. In the method, generating a composite two- and three-dimensional prostate mechanical image from a plurality of partial mechanical images extracted from pressure response data and a probe orientation data starts with examining the prostate by pressing a probe head pressure sensor array against it at various overlapping locations. Merging of partial mechanical images together is accomplished by analyzing an overlap between each subsequent and previous partial mechanical image. Finding the prostate is assisted with a supplemental pressure response data indicating the location of a sphincter known to be about 4-5 cm away from the prostate. Data processing is improved by including probe orientation data to further increase the accuracy and sensitivity of the method. The probe is equipped with a two-dimensional head pressure sensor array, a supplemental shaft sensor array and orientation tracking sensors including a three-axis magnetic sensor and a two-axis accelerometer sensor for calculating elevation, rotation and azimuth angles of the probe.
