    • A method and apparatus for selectively eliminating nuisance signals during communications connections as during conference calling in which the signals are eliminated when a call path is placed on hold by monitoring signals in a reverse traffic channel from a holding party. If the reverse traffic channel contains a predetermined signal, a music on hold circuit is disabled. When the call is first placed on hold, a check for the predetermined signal is made. If the predetermined signal is not detected during a defined period of time, the music on hold circuit is engaged; otherwise the circuit remains disabled. The predetermined signal may be noise signals, speech signals or a sequence of touch tones or speech representing a command to disable the music on hold circuit. Optionally, a disabled music on hold circuit may be enabled by placing a second command signal, such as speech or touch tones, into the reverse traffic channel.

    • It is possible to redirect a package in mid-transit, so as to deliver it to the addressee who will not be at the location to which the package was originally addressed when the package would otherwise be delivered. To do so, a package carrier, prior to delivering a package to an address specified by the sender, determines if the addressee desires the package to be rerouted to a different address. This determination is prompted by detection of the fact that the addressee is not in the vicinity of the address specified by the sender. The location of the addressee is determined from the location of a two-way pager associated with the addressee as detected by a paging antenna, e.g., tower, of a conventional two-way paging. A comparison is made between the location of the addressee and the address specified by the sender. If there is a disparity and the addressee subscribes to the package special delivery redirection service, the package is then processed according to the instructions of the addressee. One instruction that can be left by the addressee is to call the addressee and ask if he wishes the package to be redirected, and, if so, what should be the new address. Another instruction that can be left by the addressee is to automatically reroute the package to a destination which may be determined as a function of the location of the addressee.

    • A method for routing a call to a cordless/cellular telephone accessible over the landline network via a home cordless base station according to a LL#, and acessible over a cellular network according to a mobile identification number (MIN). Upon receiving a call to a cordless/cellular user's land-line telephone number (LL#) or to the corresponding MIN, the landline network ascertains whether the cordless/cellular telephone is within communication range of its home cordless base station. The telephone call is then routed to the home cordless base station only if the CCT is within communication range of the cordless base station. If the CCT is not within range of the home cordless base station, the call is forwarded by the land-line telephone network to the cellular network with the MIN in order to complete a cellular call to the CCT. In an alternative embodiment, the landline telephone network, upon receiving a call to the CCT's LL# or MIN, interfaces with the cellular network provider to ascertain whether the cordless/cellular telephone is active in the cellular mode. If the cellular mode is active, the telephone network forwards the call using the MIN to the cellular network for completion of a cellular call to the CCT. Otherwise, if the cellular mode is not active, the telephone network completes the call to the home cordless base station.

    • Disclosed is a method and system for employing underutilized communication channels as outbound gateways. A call from a calling terminal to a called terminal is routed to a first residential gateway at a first customer premises via a broadband data network and then routed from the first residential gateway to the called terminal via a local area network. The call is thereafter re-routed to a second residential gateway at a second customer premises via the broadband network and then routed from the second residential gateway to the called terminal via the local area network. The re-routing of the call via the second residential gateway may be in response to a determination that the first customer premises requires bandwidth (of either the broadband network or local area network) or other resources that are being used by the telephone call being routed via the first residential gateway. The call is thus re-routed via the second residential gateway in order to free up the resources needed by the first customer premises.
