    • A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having a SC* phase and a light-switching element using the composition are provided, which composition comprises the following components, A, B and C, each in a specified proportion: Component A has the formula ##STR1## wherein ##STR2## R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are same or different linear or branched alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy of 1-18C, X is H, halogen or CN, l, m and n are 0 or 1 and (l+m+n) is 1 or 2, and has smectic C phase;Component B has the formula ##STR3## wherein ##STR4## Y is H, halogen or CN, k is 0 or 1, R.sup.3 is linear or branched alkyl or alkoxy of 1-18C, and * is asymmetric C, and consists of optically active compounds having the same senses of Ps in SC* phase induced when dissolved in smectic C liquid crystal, to one another; andComponent C has the formula ##STR5## wherein ##STR6## Z is H, halogen or CN, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are same or different linear or branched alkyl or alkoxy of 1-18C R.sup.4 is 12-18C alkyl or 1-18C linear or branched alkoxy, and * is asymmetric C, and is an optically active compound having the same sense of Ps in SC* phase induced when dissolved in smectic C liquid crystal as that of the compound of component B.

    • A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprising smectic liquid crystal composition(s) and optically active compounds and having a spontaneous polarization value of 20 nC cm.sup.-2 or less and nevertheless having high rate response properties, and a light-switching element are provided, which composition comprises the following components (A), (B), (C) and (D), in 76-95, 2-10, 1-6 and 2-8 wt.%, respectively, based on the total quantity of the 4 components:(A): at least one compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different, being 1-18C alkyl, or the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are the same or different, being 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy and having smectic C phase:(B): an optically active compound of the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sup.5 is 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy, X is ##STR4## Y is halogen or H and * is asymmetric C atom; (C): at least one optically active compound of the formulas ##STR5## wherein R.sup.6 and R.sup.8 are 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy, R.sup.7 and R.sup.9 are 2-18C alkyl or alkoxy and * is an asymmetric C atom; and(D): at least on optically active compound formula ##STR6## wherein R.sup.10 is 1-18 C alkyl or alkoxy, Z is H or halogen and * is an asymmetric C atom.

    • A heating apparatus for hyperthermia utilizes electromagnetic waves for locally heating cancerous cells within a living body. Electromagnetic waves output from a single electromagnetic wave generating means are branched into a plurality of branched electromagnetic waves, which are respectively employed to conduct hyperthermia treatments for a plurality of patients. The whole of the hyperthermia system is controlled in a concentrated fashion from a single section by means of time-division multiplexing. It is therefore possible for a plurality of patients to be subjected to hyperthermia treatment at the same time and in parallel with each other, even when the conditions of these patients differ from one another. Further, it is advantageously possible to simplify the arrangement of the system as a whole and stabilize the control of the system.
