    • A communication device for use in a non-self synchronizing scrambling (NS3) communication system and a method for using NS3 in a communication system are disclosed. A digital data stream is scrambled by modifying the digital data stream based on a pseudo-noise sequence (PNS) to produce a scrambled digital data stream. The PNS has a timing reference that is distinct from the digital data stream. The scrambled digital data stream is capable of being descrambled by performing an inverse modification, based on the same PNS and the same timing reference. The scrambled digital data stream may be transmitted over a communication medium and descrambled at the opposing end of the communication medium. Synchronization between the scrambler and the descrambler is maintained by providing a common timing reference to the scrambler and the descrambler. The common timing reference is distinct from the data stream. The invention can be used on any communication system in which all the communication devices have a common timing reference.

    • A system and process for customizing the performance of an xDSL communication system in which a transmitting modem and a receiving modem will negotiate a performance parameter for adjustment. The receiving modem measures the signal to noise ratio on the xDSL loop and, based on that measurement, sends a request to the transmitting modem to make a specific adjustment to the selected performance parameter. The transmitting modem will make the adjustment upon receipt of the request from the receiving modem. In a preferred embodiment, the modems will choose either the data rate or the transmission power level as the performance parameter for adjustment. In a multiple xDSL system in which the xDSLs affect each others' performance through crosstalk, the present invention allows a first modem pair to instigate a transmission power reduction, which will in turn allow a second modem pair to either increase its present data rate or decrease its transmission power. Through this combination of transmission power adaptation and data rate adaptation, it is possible to reduce the performance variance between the individual communication sessions or customize the performance profile according to specific customer requirements.

    • A method and system are provided for communicating voice and data across a communication link, in a manner that senses and dynamically adapts to the simultaneous transmission of voice information across the local loop. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a method is provided for dynamically communicating data over a local loop using a modem comprising the steps of transmitting data in a full-band transmission state, sensing a band-limiting condition, and adjusting the transmission of data from the full-band transmission state to a band-limited transmission state, in response to the sensing step. In accordance with the method, data may be transmitted by the modem across the local loop at the same time that voice information is communicated via telephone across the same local loop. A significant aspect of the present invention is the dynamic allocation of the data transmission bandwidth, whereby the invention senses a condition indicative of whether voice information is being communicated. If so, then the system shifts and/or narrows the data transmission bandwidth to allow for voice communications without interference from or with the data transmission. However, when no voice information is being communicated, the invention dynamically allocates the data transmission bandwidth to utilize at least a portion, if not all, of the frequency band otherwise used for communicating voice information.

    • The present invention provides a method and apparatus for eliminating or reducing local area and broad area interference in a twisted pair transmission system. The apparatus of the present invention comprises a detection device, such as an antenna, for example, for detecting electromagnetic interference coupled into a twisted pair line, a sampling/scaling device which samples and scales the detected signal, and a combiner device which combines a signal correction component with the signal received over the twisted pair by a differential receiver. The sampling/scaling device preferably comprises an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) which converts the detected analog signal into a digital signal and a digital signal processor which receives the digital signal from the ADC and processes the signal to generate a correction signal. The correction signal is then subtracted from the signal received by the differential receiver. The sampling/scaling device may be fixed or adaptive. If the interference is stationary in time, a fixed sampling/scaling device is suitable for use with the present invention. If the interference is non-stationary, preferably the sampling/scaling device will be adaptive such that the amount of scaling performed can be altered in accordance with changes in the interference signal detected by the detector.

    • A telephone communication system is implemented to enable data communication and ring signaling to coexist on a subscriber loop. The communication system transmits data during the silence intervals of a ringing cadence and withholds the transmission of data during the occurrence of a ring signal. To ensure the transmission of reliable data, the communications system allows ring signals to occur and retransmits any interrupted data during the silence intervals between the ring signals. In another embodiment, the transmission of reliable data is ensured by delaying the ring signals until the data currently being transmitted is successfully and reliably received. Accordingly, in either embodiment, the reliability of data communication during the occurrence of a ringing cadence is preserved, and, therefore, data communication is allowed to coexist with ring signaling over a subscriber loop.
