摘要： A system and process for customizing the performance of an xDSL communication system in which a transmitting modem and a receiving modem will negotiate a performance parameter for adjustment. The receiving modem measures the signal to noise ratio on the xDSL loop and, based on that measurement, sends a request to the transmitting modem to make a specific adjustment to the selected performance parameter. The transmitting modem will make the adjustment upon receipt of the request from the receiving modem. In a preferred embodiment, the modems will choose either the data rate or the transmission power level as the performance parameter for adjustment. In a multiple xDSL system in which the xDSLs affect each others' performance through crosstalk, the present invention allows a first modem pair to instigate a transmission power reduction, which will in turn allow a second modem pair to either increase its present data rate or decrease its transmission power. Through this combination of transmission power adaptation and data rate adaptation, it is possible to reduce the performance variance between the individual communication sessions or customize the performance profile according to specific customer requirements.

摘要： A cellular modem pool provides call progress information to a calling party during call setup. In particular, the cellular modem pool includes a coupling means, which communicates any signals between the cellular-side of the cellular data connection and the PSTN-side of the cellular data connection during call setup. This allows the calling party to hear the call progress on the called party side of the data call. In addition, the cellular modem pool monitors the signals for a data signal provided by the called party, e.g., a predefined answer tone. Once the answer tone is detected, the cellular modem pool opens the connection provided by the coupling means and processes the respective signals on the cellular-side and the PSTN-side of the cellular modem pool.

This shared memory interface provides the capability to easily program the PCMCIA peripheral either in the factory or in the field. In addition, the shared memory interface removes the requirement of having a resident "boot-up" code in the PCMCIA peripheral. Finally, the shared memory interface provides the capability to transfer user data from the personal computer, i.e., data terminal, to the PCMCIA modem at a higher data transfer rate than is currently available via the modem's universal asynchronous receive/transmit (UART) integrated circuit.
